Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Mercury 75 Backpack:

This is THE most comfortable pack I have ever used in over 2000 miles of backpacking. The pivoting hipbelt and swingarm shoulder harness are revolutionary in how comfortable 40 lbs can carry. Your energy goes into moving forward without fighting against the pack with every step. This is not something you realize happens with a traditional pack, but you notice it immediately once you try the BD Mercury. I felt less tired at the end of the day with this pack, and less stiff and sore the next morning. I'll never go back to my old pack, or one like it.

I bought the 75 L pack over the 65 L because it only weighs 1 oz more, according to the specs. I think the pack actually weighed a couple ounces more than that, but it carries so well that you soon forgive that small error. BD is one of the few companies that makes fitting the pack easy, with their fitting harness. I took the pack to my local EMS, where they sized me with the BD fittng harness, transferred the harness to the pack, and adjusted it to fit. Perfect the first time. The pack is thoughtfully designed and built very robustly. I'm confident it will last many, many years. There is a small water hose holder on the shoulder strap that works perfectly, and the whistle built into the sternum buckle is ear piercing; both very nice features. There are several internal pockets, most of which I doubt I will ever use, that add a couple of unnecessary ounces in my opinion. My only real complaints about the pack is that there are no straps across the front panel, no daisy chains, no ice axe holder, and no strap inside the pack from the top of the frame sheet to the front of the pack for cinching down the load. However, none of those diminishes my love for this pack, and I look forward to many years of pleasurable hiking with it.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Mercury 75 Backpack:

OK, as for the pack it was great looking with great features, I really wish I could have tried it. However I needed to upgrade my current pack to a new 75Liter pack. this pack is really a 65 liter pack with the 10 liter extension collar. There is nothing wrong with that, I just needed a full 75 liters, I returned the pack and got a Deuter 75+10, meaning the pack itself carried 75 liters and then has an extra 10 liters in the collar. The black diamond pack appeared to be great in every way, except the volume. if you need a nice 65 liter pack, this may be your pack.

Comments about BLACK DIAMOND Mercury 75 Backpack:

This is the most comforable full size pack I have ever used. The SwingArm shoulder harness and pivoting hipbelt are amazing. You don't feel like you're fighting the pack with every step, and I was less sore after carrying it all day than with my prior fixed suspension pack. I carried this pack for 19 days this Summer, including a 16 day trip on the PCT in WA. It has many handy features, like the hose holder, panel access to the main bag, and internal zippered pockets that make life a little easier and help you stay organized. The hipbelt seems short, but offered excellent support and comfort. In fact, it eliminated irritation of a pinched nerve at the front of my hip that had occured with other packs I've worn.

Durability was excellent, with one glaring exception. After about 8 or 9 days I started to notice wear on the back of the hipbelt and the cloth bellows covering the cable housing at the bottom of the shoulder straps, where the two rub together. This occured on both sides of the hipbelt. In a few more days the hipbelt looked like a mouse had chewed on it and both bellows had worn completely through forming a hole about 1/4" in diameter. Functionally, the pack continued to work flawlessly, but I would expect problems with the SwingArm suspension working properly after sand and dirt work their way through the hole and into the cable guide system. Black Diamond CS offered to replace the pack, which I did, but offered no permanent solution to the problem, saying this was only the second occurance of which they were aware. I love the pack, but I fully expect the same problem to occur with my new one unless I develop a way to protect the bellows. I have the hipbelt positioned at its maximum length, which might contribute to the interference between the hipbelt and cable housing, so others with a shorter torso may not experience the same problem. With that caviat, I would recommend this pack for anyone looking for all day comfort.

      Service and delivery comments:

Excellent CS at local store in Amherst, NY to return old pack and order a new one. Automated E-mails kept me informed of order and shipping status of new pack. Order arrived as scheduled and in perfect condition.
