Introducing the EMS® Feather Pack 800 DownTek™ Down Jacket
Building on the success of last year’s Icarus Jacket, the EMS® Feather Pack is an all-new take on our most versatile Winter jacket. Simply stated: this is one of the best down jackets available in its class.
Fill-power is a measurement of “loft” – in other words, the amount of space and air trapped by the down. Fill-power is the number of cubic inches an ounce of down fills when allowed to expand to its fullest. By industry standards, 400-450 fill-power is considered medium quality; 500-550 fill-power is good quality; 550-750 fill-power is excellent quality; 750 and above is the best. The DownTek™ goose down in the EMS® Feather Pack Down Jacket is 800 fill-power. Translation: our latest innovation represents the highest class of down jackets. More Fill-Power = More Loft = More Warmth.
DOWNTEK™ DOWN – REDEFINING THE STANDARD
When down gets wet, its fibers collapse – that’s when most down jackets lose their warmth. DownTek™ goose down is enhanced with a proprietary treatment that makes their down water resistant (see the “Shake Test” video). By absorbing 30% less water and drying 60% faster than untreated down, the EMS® Feather Pack Down Jacket is versatile enough to handle any adventure.
100% RIPSTOP NYLON
Woven with reinforcing threads in a crosshatch pattern, Ripstop Nylon prevents ripping and tearing. It’s one of the strongest forms of nylon around – they make parachutes out of this stuff.
Durable Water Repellent coating is applied to the nylon shell to help shed light precipitation. It’s like a freshly-waxed car: water beads up and rolls right off. The down stays dry, you stay warm.
WHY DOWN IS THE WORLD’S BEST INSULATION
You deserve down. Here’s why:
Compressibility: Compared to synthetic insulations, down is typically more compressible, meaning that it can be packed into a very small space.
Warmth-to-Weight Ratio: Ounce for ounce, goose down is warmer than most synthetic insulations.
Longevity: Down is very resilient and will retain its loft and ability to insulate for a lifetime when you care for it properly. Of all the reasons to choose down, this might be the strongest one.
Down Is In Our DNA
what is downtek™?
DownTek™ starts with RDS Certified Down. The Responsible Down Standard symbolizes ethically-sourced down. DownTek™ coats this down with a proprietary treatment that enhances the water-repellent nature of the down clusters. Water beads on the surface rather than soaking in, allowing the down to retain its loft and keep you warm. While others have figured out how to make down water resistant, only DownTek™ broke the code on doing so without adding weight – and doing it in an environmentally-friendly way.
THE SHAKE TEST VIDEO
The International Down and Feather Bureau (IDFB) has developed official test methods for evaluating the quality of water repellent down. One method, called the Hydrophobic Shake Test or Shake Test, is shown below. Down is placed into a cylinder and shaken up to 1,000 minutes. The average time to failure for untreated down is 22 minutes. Down treated with DownTek™ endures over 1,000 minutes (or 16+ hours) of shaking.
Absorbs 30% less water than untreated down
Dries 60% faster than untreated down
Retains significantly more loft than untreated down after exposure to moisture
DownTek™ products can be washed without losing the ability to repel water
DownTek™ retains the same fill power as untreated down
Water repellent treatment adds no measurable weight
Products with DownTek™ remain drier and lightweight longer
All natural, non-synthetic treated down

how to properly care for DownTek™ products
Avoid normal liquid laundry detergents that contain solvents which diminish loft and insulating properties. Be aware that these types of detergents leave behind residues that interfere with the DWR treatment. We reccommend you use a down-specific cleaner to maintain the quality and performance of your jacket.
