Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Jacket:

    Dear EMS:

I'm glad that you are finally getting the EMS expedition parka right again. Back in the 1990's I worked for EMS in the Freehold, NJ and Colorado Springs, CO stores for about 7 years, on and off. You've always made great products and had a great knack for customer service. The EMS expedition shell from the 1990's (the 2-layer Goretex Shell) was one of the most awesome pieces of technical gear I've ever owned. My old shell lasted about 15 years, but now has blow out zippers and too many holes to count. A number of my friends also had EMS Expedition shells and fondly remember that shell as their favorite ever. Some of the things about the old shell that were so great were:
    • Articulated hood fit over a helmet and allowed a full range of motion
    • Powder skirt kept out the snow
    • Length was adequate to keep snow out when you bent over
    • Available in bright, safe colors
    • Numerous pockets

My father picked me up an EMS Helix Jacket for my birthday. I had purchased and returned last year's EMS expedition shell due to inadequate hood articulation and short length. This year's Helix is a big improvement. I'm exchanging the black shell that was ordered for a blue shell. Here's what makes this shell good:
    • Adequate length
    • Articulated hood fits over a helmet and allows good range of motion
    • Nice zippers

Here's some suggestions for next year. If you implement all of them, I'll definitely buy another jacket! There's a market for a great expedition parka that costs less than $400 and is well thought out.
    • Make the jacket in red, yellow or orange. It's just plain unsafe to travel in the backcountry in a black or white jacket. What were you thinking? Have you ever tried to find someone wearing black or white in a storm? Blue is OK, but not ideal. I'd even wear pink.
    • More zippered pockets. A minimum of three: one inside, two outside. I like the current non-zippered pockets; they'll work well for stuffing climbing skins.
    • Powder skirt
    • Don't change the length or hood. They're perfect!
    • Slightly heavier fabric. I'm certain that my current shell will get torn when skiing trees or taking a tumble on rocks/ice.
    • Goretex or event? Time will tell how the System 3 works out.

Thanks for your consideration and happy trails!
    Cheers

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Jacket:

This is a great jacket (I bought 2) - rain just beads right up on it. And it is very breathable, so it doesn't feel like you're wearing a trash bag like some other rain jackets. It's just right for a rain jacket, and I'm looking forward to wearing it in the snow.

The fit is a bit large, but this is true for most EMS shells. I usually wear a medium in other brands(6'0" athletic build) and I like my clothes to fit me well, but I wear a small in the EMS brand shells. I could wear a thick sweater underneath this one, but much more might be too tight. Luckily, that's all I usually need.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Jacket:

EMS hit the nail on the head with this jacket. FINALLY (I have had many problems with thier other shells, mainly the Orion and older version of the Helix)... The welded seams, snag free waterproof riri zippers (which should hold up much better than the feeble zippers on my orion) , higher denier abrasion panels on the hood, shoulders and arms for added durability and stretch nylon make this as bomber of a shell as you will find for the price. Have used mine skiing, climbing and also in the rain and it has outperformed my expectations. I should also note that the DWR finish on this jacket seems to bead water up much better than previous shells from EMS that I have owned. New formula perhaps. My only complaint is that it could breath a little better but this is a very minor gripe. All in all this is a truly nice backcountry shell with simple features that funtion well. Simplicity at it's best! Reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because a 5 star shell does not exist.

Recently bought this item online (sight unseen) - used it the first snow storm, was very impressed with how warm it was over a basic fleece pullover. The shell is also extremely light - this initially concerned me until I used it, now I view this as a positive. Nice waterproof covering too! This could well be my favorite jacket!

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Jacket:

I purchased this last winter as a shell layer with the hopes I could use it in the wet New England spring long after the snow melted. To date, I grab this jacket before all others in the rain or snow, in the cold, or even not-so-cold.

The fit is great: not so bulky as to leave tons of room if you wear it alone, but very comfortable with an insulating layer(s) underneath. While the pockets are slightly awkward while wearing it in the city, they're genius when wearing a pack and provide excellent access around pack straps.

performance: It stands up to all forms of weather. I wear it camping or in the city during rain, wind or snow and it has yet to fail me. I'm warm without being sweaty and have already worn it several times this fall (though I've needed to use the "pit vents" on some of the warmer wet days to regulate my temperature). It's now seen winter spring and fall and works well for whatever occasion I'm in.

My one complaint is the hood. It's designed to be comfortable over a helmet as needed though I find it fairly awkward to adjust if I'm not wearing one. It's definitely more comfortable when worn with a winter cap but on warmer days tends to slip over my eyes until I get it properly adjusted. It's a minor complaint but one I consistently have to deal with. Thankfully there are a couple different strap adjustment options so getting it right isn't a huge chore.

Of note, I balked a bit at the price when I purchased it but since then have come to feel it was worth every cent. Definitely one of the best pieces of gear I own.

This jacket is being used regularly and so far is doing the job it was intended to do. The man using this jacket works outside on the average of 2-4 times a week and with all the rain we have had in the east he is staying dry day after day.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Jacket:

Bought this jacket for myself for Christmas this past year. I bought it for Snowboarding because I hate wearing big bulky snowboard jackets. Also for hiking and biking. Was able to wear it once on a very cold day snowboarding and with the right base layers I was warm. I wore it once on a hike during a a snowy afternoon, after about an hour I put the hood up to block the snow and wind. I tried to tighten the stap on the hood and it broke. Not very durable. Now I have a jacket that I have worn twice and is broke.
