Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Packable Pack:

I have had the old zipper top version of this pack for 4 or 5 years and still like it. However, I wanted one with water bottle storage on the outside. To test the pack, I used it on a day trip to Great Falls National Park for a couple of hours with my wife and 3 kids under 12 in late October. Typical fall colors walk. I carried five rain coats, two filled 1 liter water bottles, and some 7x30 binoculars. In the top pocket I carried a first aid kit. The pack was still not full. Food for a longer hike would have fit. So the pack is generously sized. How did the pack "handle?" I even carried my 4 year old on my arm and scrambled over some rocks to get to the water below the falls, and frankly never thought about the pack until we climbed back up. So it handles well in that it does not flop around when almost full. Construction? The pack has a lightweight construction. It appears to be quality rip-stop, polyurethane coated nylon fabric which is suitable for travel and hiking where you will not be dragging the pack across rocks. It should stand up to light rain like my previous pack of this type. Nice foldable pack. Recommended!

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Packable Pack:

I do most of my errands on foot. I have a lightweight messenger bag that works well for carrying my stuff, but is too small to add groceries, packages, etc. So I like to have a second bag for the overflow. I wanted my hands free so I needed either a bag with shoulder straps or another, bigger, messenger style bag.

I looked in lots of stores and online. There were some reasonably priced, lightweight packs, but they all were in the 17-20L range. I wanted something bigger than that. One company offered a lightweight tote with backpack straps, but it was nearly three times as expensive as the EMS pack. Another company had a reasonably priced tote, but the backpack straps weren't as good as the EMS bag, and it wasn't really packable.

Another feature that the EMS pack has that others don't have is a sternum strap. I thought that would be helpful to keep the pack from banging around while I walked or ran.

So, in summary, you will have trouble finding another bag that is this lightweight, this size, and for this price. There just aren't many options available.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Packable Pack:

Needed a day pack that was comfortable with straps that stayed on and this is a great pack for that! Main compartment very roomy and external water bottle sections make is easy to hydrate without having to take the pack off. This was a Christmas present to myself and I was very happy with it. Looking forward to some great adventures both hiking and biking wearing this pack. Lightweight and stylish enough to even use when on vacation in lieu of a purse and have plenty of room to stash gifts for the family in it. Great value as well.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Packable Pack:

We did a week of day hikes out west and used this backpack. It traveled nicely in our suitcase. When converted to backpack it is very roomy and light. We loved it. We carried over 4 liters of water, snacks, extra clothing, and camera stuff. It rode comfortably, the chest strap was perfect. Our only complaint is the elastic side pockets for water bottles were too loose. We were rock scrambling and often would drop our water bottles. I will try to add some kind of draw string. It is too bad this wasn't designed into pack...then it would be perfect.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Packable Pack:

I just bought one of these bags for my husband after having one for a few years and using it for most of my hikes and canoe trips. My friend also has one and uses it all the time. It isn't meant for heavy sharp objects but is great for food, clothes, water and emergency gear. The side pockets in mine are a little short for Nalgene bottles. I have said many times that this is the most useful pack I have!
