Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Solstice 20° Sleeping Bag, Long:
I bought this for home use in case the power goes out during winter storms. It replaces a rectangular, "slumber bag" which was probably rated for 40-45 degrees.
I was looking for something with a bit more warmth, and figured the 20-30 degree range would be about right. When I researched on-line the available options at EMS, this bag didn't come up; all bags I was looking at were in the $160-180 range. At the store however, I found the Solstice 20 at a considerably lower price.
Never having used a mummy style bag before, I didn't know what to expect. This bag is certainly a step up from a slumber bag in warmth, weight, and packability.
I don't think the store employee really knew the product because in discussing the differences in length between the Regular and Long, she claimed anyone over 5'6" would need a long, but nowhere in the store or on the web site could I find dimensions. That didn't make sense to me so I gambled and bought the Regular anyway. Fact is, it appears the Regular would probably fit anyone up to 6'0" as I'm 5'6" and there's definitely extra length available. Not a big deal. To be fair, she did unpackage a bag and offer I try it on for size, which was good customer service.
I have to get used to the limited foot space of a mummy bag vs. the roomy area of the old slumber bag. Here's where the slumber bag wins out.
I'm usually skeptical of items at the low end of any price range, expecting them to lack important features or performance. In this case, the Solstice 20 pleasantly met my needs at a bargain price.
