Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zen Daypack:

The Zen daypack makes it easy to stay organized and gives you quick access to all your stuff. All compartments are accessible thru separate zippers from the outside, not little dividers inside big compartments like some bags. The bigger zippers start on top and run down alternating sides so it's easy to find the right zipper every time, and with the big flaps supported diagonally from above they can't flop wide open and spill their contents while you fish for something on the move. Glasses compartment is top center, suspended over main load, big enough to hold cases for both sunglasses and regular glasses and easily accessed for swapping when going indoors or out; also has a cord pass-thru for music. Big central compartment easily swallows a change of clothes for bike commuting, rain jacket, lunch, and lots more, also has hydration bladder pouch with tube pass-thru. Computer pocket has sling bottom to keep computer from banging on ground, and all spaces have light-colored liners to help you see what's inside. All padding and straps are well placed and work well; bag is very comfortable, snug and balanced when loaded, looks tidy, and slips easily under an airplane seat.

I travel a lot and grew to hate my old pack's identical parallel zippers and deep, dark compartments that would dump their contents if unzipped far enough to see the bottom. I just lived out of my new ZEN pack for 2 weeks of travel to a professional conference and it made everything easy. Only negatives - pack won't sit upright on its bottom, needs to hang, lean, or lay down; and the big central compartment has the only weatherflap-covered zipper. All those unprotected zippers are great for quick access, but I'd like my computer to have as much weather protection as my clothes and lunch. But overall this is a very cleverly designed, practical bag that's easy to live with.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zen Daypack:

I didn't realize this was a "school backpack". I was shopping for a backpack to carry my personal belongings for the week I traveled around the North Island of New Zealand and I just had to have this one. I was concerned that it wouldn't hold all of my stuff but it handled it so well! With all the compartments, all my stuff was separated nicely so I didn't have to dig around a lot. My shoulders got sore sometimes, but that's really my own fault for not using the extra strap. It handled wonderfully being worn constantly and tossed around constantly. I love it!

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zen Daypack:

Picked this pack up while I was looking at the brand name bags that EMS carries. Happened to spot it below the big name packs, and was pleased that it seemed designed for my every day carry needs. Felt lined iPad and laptop pockets, an eyeglass pocket, and three exterior pockets make everything accessible. Really nice design, solid zippers, and compresses down for a low profile. Rides well when loaded. An interior mesh pocket and a wider hip belt with pockets would be the only improvements I could suggest. A good find.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zen Daypack:

I bought this to replace an old knapsack that I use mostly for work and travel, as I wanted a padded pocket for my laptop. This product is good in that regard; however, you do give up the capacity for larger, bulky items (for example, what you may want to bring into work for lunch). For travel, I like to be able to put my toiletry bag into my knapsack. This one is now a tight fit due to the space taken by the padded laptop pocket. I haven't used it for work yet, so I may find that things will fit okay depending on where I end up placing and storing my items. Overall, I would say that if you want a knapsack with the capacity to carry random bulky items, this may not be the best choice. I got it on sale, so I will keep it and try to make it work out for my needs.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zen Daypack:

After adjusting/releasing the straps, there are very long straps left hanging with no way to secure them. When traveling with the bag under the seat in front of you, the straps get stepped on and tripped over. If there was a way to secure the leftover straps, that would be great!

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zen Daypack:

I was looking for a new school backpack after my old one broke. I'm very organized and needed to be able to separate my books from supplies from computer from chargers and such. There were enough areas for all of that AND pockets to hold my wallet, sunglasses, pencil sharpeners, and erasers. The only think I would say is that it is sometimes difficult to take my laptop out of the laptop pocket but this would not stop me from buying this backpack all over again! Simply unzipping the whole laptop pocket solves this issue.
