Kayak Strokes & Rescues
LAKE PEARL, WRENTHAM
The best way to learn to kayak is to take a full day kayak course that covers outfitting, strokes and rescues. This is a class that goes several steps beyond our Primary Strokes by spending more time on the strokes in the morning and focusing on rescues skills in the afternoon. This is a comprehensive seven hour kayak class that covers a wide range of skills and techniques. We provide plenty of time to practice and refine each skill in order to maximize our fun and build our overall confidence.
The day will begin with outfitting and exploring the essential concepts of efficient paddling. We will cover topics like essential kayaking equipment, how to hold and use your paddle, proper kayaking posture and kayak fit, lifting and carrying your kayak, how to launch and land and how to perform a wet exit. While on the water we will introduce propulsion strokes, sweep strokes, ruddering strokes as well as edging and bracing. Having a chance to practice wet exits allows us to increase our confidence as we move into assisted and self rescues. During the afternoon we get a chance to refine our skills as we practice several of the essential rescue techniques such as the T-rescue, bow rescue and paddle float rescue.
The goal for this class is to provide the participants with the skills and confidence head out on their own, perform a rescue when needed and build a foundation for future kayak instruction. The skills you learn in this class will prepare you for one of our ocean based kayaking adventures.
Kayak Strokes and Rescues takes place on a protected and calm water body to enhance your learning experience. At the conclusion of this class you will be ready to join our ocean courses.
This is a full day entry level kayaking course and no prior kayak experience required. Participants should expect to be in their kayak for most of the day. Appropriate mid-sized kayaks with proper flotation are used during this class. Swimming is not required.
Note: Groups classes require a minimum enrollment of two people. If you are booking alone for a class your reservation is subject to change up until the last day if the minimum enrollment is not reached. If you have a flexible schedule and you do not mind being matched with other paddlers for the day, joining a class is a great option. For private lessons please call 800-310-4504.
