Backcountry Ski Leadership Workshop
NORTH CONWAY, NEW HAMPSHIRE
This 2-day workshop is the answer to the question “whats next?”. If it has been a while since you took our AIARE 1 avalanche course, or are looking to brush up on your backcountry skiing skills; this is a perfect course for you. In this 2 day workshop we will start out with a quick indoor refresher session and review some of the highlights of the AIARE 1 curriculum. We will then head outside for a practical review of your technical skills including companion rescue, digging test pits, and field observations. At the end of day one the group will work together, under the guidance of our ski guides, to come up with a tour plan for the next day. Day 2 will be spent in the field following the route your group created on day 1. The goal of today will be to get YOU out in front, making team decisions in the back country. And of course, to get some great turns in on some of the best backcountry ski terrain in the east!
NOTE: It is recommended that you’ve taken AIARE 1, and have several days experience backcountry skiing before taking this course. The topics covered in this course build off avalanche safety topics learned in AIARE 1 and should not be taken in lieu of a sanctioned avalanche training course.
Groups meet promptly at 8:30am at the Eastern Mountain Sports in North Conway. Click here for directions. In the morning you will meet your guide, sign a waiver form, and get fitted with gear for the day. You should also bring enough food and water for the entire day. The day will end around 4:30pm back at EMS.
