Early morning route planning, Narragansett Bay
This 6 hour course will prepare you for paddleboarding in open water conditions. If you have taken our Intro to Paddleboarding class and are looking to advance your skills, paddle longer distances, and explore the world of ocean paddling; then this class is an essential training tool to help you accomplish your goals.
Ocean Paddleboarding will introduce you to paddling in a dynamic environment with a focus on trip planning in open water conditions where wind, waves, currents, tides and boat traffic are factors in your decision making process. Our American Canoe Association (ACA) certified paddleboard instructors have extensive paddling experience in Narragansett Bay and surrounding waterways. In addition to learning paddle skills under the supervision of a certified SUP instructor, you will be trained by local paddlers who have an intimate knowledge of the area and can help guide you on your next adventure.
In the morning we will put together an itinerary using information gathered from the marine forecast, tides, and general observations of the days weather. Route planning is an essential part of any trip, especially when paddling in open water environments. After discussing the day ahead and preparing our boards and equipment, we move to the water and spend a short time reviewing and refining our strokes all while paddling further out into the bay.
Throughout the course we will teach you various methods to check and track your progress while navigating in open water. We also learn how to tow a tired paddler, how to make simple repairs on the fly, VHF radio communication and other ways to communicate in an emergency. These topics are covered in conversation and are demonstrated while paddling.
Equipment used includes displacement board leash, paddle, deck bag, and life jackets. For colder weather paddling drysuit or wetsuit, and paddle jacket, and booties are used. These items can be provided for you and are included at no extra cost with your course fee. You are free to use your own equipment too.
