Ice Climbing Fast Track
LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK
Join us on this course for some great climbing on both snow and ice, and you’ll come away with a full understanding of the fundamentals of winter climbing. In this 2-day course, we combine our Winter Climbing 101 and our Ice Climbing 201 courses to provide a comprehensive 2-day ice climbing experience which focuses on the very foundation skills of ice climbing and winter mountaineering while providing an opportunity to test your ice climbing skills on steeper terrain.
Boots, crampons, and ice axes will become your primary tools, as well as ropes and related equipment that allow us to climb for the days terrain. On day 1, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of ice climbing and mountaineering while enjoying your practice of efficient movement with crampons and ice axe. We will also practice self-arrest techniques and, as we move onto steeper terrain, the ropes and climbing harnesses come out so that we can move with confidence as the angle increases. On day 2, we focus on specific techniques for efficient movement on steeper ice. We’ll help you fine-tune those techniques and then move on to ice protection and anchors. As with all of our courses, we provide all technical gear and offer everyone personalized instruction in a group environment.
After completing this course you will have a better understanding of the tools used for ice climbing and mountaineering, how to belay, walking with crampons, using an ice axe, self-arrest and climbing on moderate and steeper angle ice and snow, fundamentals of ice anchors, and practice using proper technique on steeper ice terrain.
IMPORTANT: 1) Weather and conditions may inhibit us from covering all topics outlined in this course.
