It’s no wonder why Rhode Island is the home of the EMS Kayak School. From the protected Olney Pond at Lincoln Woods State Park to the open waters off the coast of Newport, we can challenge any type of paddler. In Rhode Island we offer both flatwater (lakes & ponds) and ocean paddling adventures from a number of different locations across the state. Most basic kayak lessons are held at our boat house and kayak rental facility at Lincoln Woods State Park. Here we offer kayak lesson and rentals seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Our most popular basic kayak class at Lincoln Woods State Park is Kayak Strokes and Rescues. This comprehensive full day class is perfect for anyone who has never had formal kayak instruction. For our more advanced paddlers we offer a wide variety of open water programs on Narragansett Bay and off the coast of Newport, Jamestown and the South Shore of Rhode Island. These programs range from two day open ocean classes to single day rock hopping and kayak surfing classes. For proficient paddlers looking to become kayak instructors, we offer level 1-5 certification through the American Canoe Association (ACA). Upon completion of these courses student will be certified and ready to teach their skills to others. All lessons are prescheduled at the beginning of the season (calendar of dates available online); but private, group and family paddling days are also available upon special request.

Kayaking tours are also available in Newport Harbor, 100 Acre Cove in Barrington, and throughout Narragansett Bay from June through October. These 3-4 hour tours are also prescheduled (check dates online) and great for any skill level. No previous experience is required for paddling programs and all equipment is provided for programs at no extra cost. We just ask that you arrive dressed appropriate for the weather (paddle shoes required, no sandals please) and bring snacks and water for the day. In addition to years experience and local knowledge, all kayak programs are taught and led by American Canoe Association (ACA) Certified Instructors. Kayak Instructors also hold CPR and first aid certification.
