The only downfall of the gri gri is its price and the fact that it's not good for belaying a lead. You also have to lower people pretty slowly, so it feels like you have less control. However, if you are a new belayer or are just trying to rest your hands a bit between climbs, these help and are safer. I'd recommend these to a friend for specific purposes and only if the person already knew how to belay w/ an ATC. Just think--if you're climbing w/ a newbie who gets stung by a wasp or bitten by something while belaying, wouldn't you prefer to be on w rope w/a self-arresting device that was anchored? Just in case? I thin kthe pros outweight the cons of this device for top-roping, sport, and indoor climbing.
The Petzl Grigri has been SUCH an amazing tool. Lately I've been living in Hawaii, and there are limited climbing resources here, so I have had to ship everything out. The mos timportant piece after the rope and harness is my Grigri. We've been rappelling into volcanic craters, shafts formed by lava tubes, and from really, really tall trees. It's given me a sense of confidence and saftey, as I have compelete control over speed, stopping ability, and integrity of the product itself.
It also provides a very hgh level of ease for belaying, and is very simple to use.
I highly recommend this product!
A very nice piece to have but it is a little pricey
I bought my Gri-Gri a few months ago after asking one of the guys setting routes at the gym if I could try it out. I love my ATC and you can't get any simpler than that, but the Gri-Gri is a great device for people who spend more time belaying and less time climbing. Recently, many of my friends and friends of friends have asked me to teach them how to climb and this is where the Gri-Gri is the best. Inexperienced climbers look at it like it is the holy grail of climbing gear because it makes them feel safer on the wall. Even though they trust you, when they know what the Gri-Gri does and how much you paid for it, they feel a lot safer. Also, its holding power is great when you have someone who hangdogs ever two moves because they are scared or tired. Love this thing, just wish it was lighter!
excellent
Yes, it works just fine, we all know that. I bought this primarily because I am an instructor and I sometimes belay for many hours during Boy Scout events. It reduces arm fatigue by allowing you to apply less pressure (its cam lock self-actuates in the event of a fall).
I was annoyed to find that the biner hole is too small to accept my personal locking biners, which are Omega Pacific screw lock D's. A quick check revealed it does not fit some other brands as well, mostly aluminum, due to greater width at the non-gate end of the biner. Fortunately I have a couple of steel locking biners that will fit in the hole. Come on, Petzl, it would not have cost much to make the hole large enough to accept other common biner brands (Petzl aluminum locking biners do fit in the hole).
We use these all the time for letting our clients have a go at belaying each other. As they say, you still need to remain vigilent, but as long as the belayer holds onto the rope, the person at the other end goes nowhere! One down side is that it takes an absolute age to lower people on these as you need one hand on the device and the other on the rope, but in most occasions it IS better to be safe than sorry.
Now if only they'd make them cheaper...
Not absolutely necessary, but a great piece of gear. Worth the extra price for the solid feel and action.
I really like this Gri Gri.
