I have used the Garmin Legend with Mapsource. It has comes in handy when the blazes for the AT would be hard to find. I preload the route that I will be taking and then hike. I usually turn it off when in cover and turn back on when I get a clear view of the sky. It does have the drawback in that the screen is small. If you doing a 10+ mile hike to get the whole view you lose all the contour lines and detail. If you zoom in you lose the context of where you are.
good product with the basic features. Loses signal in heavy cover, but I love my etrex. I use it in the car, in the woods, and even on a cruise ship. Lots of fun for the money.
Bought this item with expectaion that it would be useful on vacation trip. It had a hard time picking up satelite signals and the detail is not any better than that of a map. At home, unless I was already familiar with the local streets, it was about as useful as having someone explaining to me that the street I'm looking for is over there somewhere to the east. It's most useful feature is the ability to read altitude but that doesn't justify the cost. Since it's been of no value hiking, I thought about buying mapsource to add detail but I'm reluctant to spend another $[...]. to justify the initial expense.
