This GPS is easy to use once you understand the operations. The manual is not user friendly. I had difficulty finding specific information to operate the unit. However, once a friend who was more familiar with the unit showed me how to use certain functions it became easier. Example: using the key pad to enter way points. I don't think this is explained in enough detail in the manual. A video showing how to work this GPS would be helpful to someone not tech savy like me. Knowing what additional softwear to purchase is also tricky.

Very accurate handheld. Top of the Line.

I hike alot into deep forests and woodsy area's. I like to venture off the trail and into the deep woods. With this device I feel as if im safe at all time and can find my way back to the trail or car with no problem. I always carry several spare recharged batteries with me just in case because the unit does go through alot of batteries. I uploaded topo maps and I can see the rivers and the inclines before I approach them so I can find my way around them if I dont feel like going through that terrain. I use it most for the sport and hobby of geocaching. That was my main reason for purchasing. This unit is considered the TOP OF THE LINE in my sport and I love it. I would be lost without one.

Being frustrated with my eTrex Vista, which can't maintaining a satellite lock in wooded areas and takes forever to acquire satellites even in open areas, I was encouraged when reading the reviews of the 60CSx and its new chipset (SiRFstar III). After purchase and use now for several weeks, I am a believer!

The 60CSx acquires satellites quickly in parking lots, under the tree canopy, while attached to my pack's chest harness, even when just stuck in my shirt pocket. And then it HOLDS those satellites. Post hike reviews of my track logs show contiguous tracks even while hiking thru deep drainages under tree cover. This while held up against my body.

Because usb is a powered connection, this gps runs on external power (not the batteries) when connected via usb cable to the computer. Nice.

Features I really like - rain proof, usb connection, external antenna connection (which I haven't needed), night mode (reverses colors), and very long battery life.

It comes with the software to get the computer to recognize the device, a usb cable (I actually use my camera's usb cable, so now I have a spare), the memory card, a wrist strap and a quick-release belt clip (like some cell phones come with). The only thing I've bought extra is some sheets of pda screen protectors. I cut them to size and put them on my screen as a low cost and low bulk solution to a holder. I recommend doing this, as some bug sprays will melt screens, and minor drops can scratch up the screen, if not protected.

Because I already had an older Garmin GPS receiver I already had the topo and road mapping software I needed. I only needed to go out to the Garmin website and get the latest free updates to them and I was up and running.

Summery: I love this GPS receiver.

Cons:
Expensive, Short Battery Life
Best Uses:
Adventure, Hiking, Travel

It's great. I set it up right out of the box and didn't have to look at the instructions. Only cons would be that you really need at the avalible softwere to make it work best. That'll cost you around [$] extra. Car charger, driving chip, mapsource, national geographic CDROM MAPS, hoster, cover, case, waterproof bag, extra memory chip, bike mount and batts. BUT IT'S WORTH IT> BUY THIS THING IT REALLY ROCKS!

I own a Garmin 276C, but I needed a sophisticated GPS for leading a hike of 80-year olds across Florida on roads, as well trails in the Ocala National Forest. I need street maps, topos, POI's and other resources. The 60CSx has capacity to store waypoints, tracks and routes that we will need. It will do the job. I like the AA batteries, light weight, Micro SD card. Good product.

this is my first unit, and i am by no means an expert. but this unit is easy to use and set up. i'm still waiting for the garmin's os x version of the interface, but that isn't a big deal. still haven't used it for trekking, but i sure am waiting patiently for spring to arrive.

Mostly great fun
By DanVerified Reviewer from Alabama on 1/2/2007
Pros:
Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, Fun, Short learning curve, Useful
Best Uses:
Hiking

Two negatives. The memory chip loosens too easily, requiring reseating to restore map. The cost of purchasing maps is a semihidden cost to achieve full usefulness.

This is a simple but accurate gps that has all the bells and whistles for a decent price. Everyone should carry one of these if they are into discovery or exploration.

Nice, but be prepared to buy more
By The Science TeacherVerified Reviewer from Wellston, MI on 9/25/2006
Pros:
Durable, Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, Reliable
Best Uses:
In Car, Travel

The GPS is fine, except it doesn't come with the real good (precise, updated) software. That you have to buy extra.
Also be careful of SanDisk Ultra II - they don't seem to work in this unit for some reason
