I actually bought this unit for one of the new Eagle Scouts in my Venturing Crew. I personally own and use the Vista HCx which is similar, but allows the addition of a MicroSD 2 GB chip. It is spectacularly bright, colorful and easy to use.
The Venture HC is very accurate and works the same without the barometric altimeter and electronic compass. One must reload it with detailed map data when changing locations if detail is needed, as 24 MB is somewhat limiting. With all the cheap solid state memory out there, one would think it not cost prohibitive to at least put in 1 GB instead of 24 MB. But for those who love hiking and touring, it work great, and even without detailed maps, it comes with a world map pre-loaded.

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I did not realize that this unit did not have a compass nor an altimeter when I ordered it. And as a hiker, backpacker and x-country skier those two things are important. Also the symbols and letters are quite small-- even on the large setting--but I find this to be true of most GPS. The digital screen is almost impossible to read in bright sunlight--also to true of any digital screen.
Eastern Mountain Sports Response:It should be noted that most outdoor professionals suggest carrying a real magnetic compass despite having a GPS, electronic compass or not. This GPS will provide “GPS altitude” which is not affected by changes in weather (barometric pressure) and can often be more accurate. Keep in mind...our first priority is your complete satisfaction with your Eastern Mountain Sports® purchase.
