I just finished a 5 day 70 mike kyaking trip and the Triton performed well under rainy, wet conditions. After the initial set up, I was able to easily download the trip maps and waypoints from my PC to the Triton. The Triton was easy to use and the screen easy to read during the trip.

Can't afford the batteries!

Cons:
Difficult To Read, Short Battery Life
Describe Yourself:
Technically Savvy
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Well, I read the other reviews not only here on EMS but also on the general internet. Most were not good, but I decided it was a good price so I tried it anyway.
It DOES lock on fast.
Right out of the box, my unit displayed the same odometer problem as others have mentioned, but now Magellan has released a firmware update that corrects it.
I did like the display, as long as you used the light- even with the backlight cranked all the way up, you could not see the display in sunlight.
There are also very few software options for upgrading right now.
The BIGGEST, most glaring problem with the Triton is the battery life. At first, I noticed short battery life but chalked it up to me having it on a lot, programming in all my preferences. But it didn't get any better. So I kept track.
The latest battery drain was this: Fresh batteries on July 4th. Turned it on in South Carolina and let it get a fix (quick). Put in my waypoint and then shut it off. Went back to Tennessee and turned it back on to get a fix on the 7th. Put in that waypoint and shut it off. This afternoon (the 11th), it would not turn on due to low batteries. THAT is how bad the battery life is.
I will be returning this to EMS.

The unit looked nice, good screen with color display at a [$]price point and a SIRF chip. Good start up time. After one day my first unit locked up and would not unlock. It took 3 hours to get to cost. support and while friendly could not help. Returned to the store and got a replacement unit. Well this one would not load the maps. So back it all went.

Excellent gift for my directionally challenged son. He hates bulky maps, but loves this new toy. He is still praising me for such a thoughtful gift.

Bought this GPS for quick and accurate locations, and hoped it would be good for local mapping. I liked the simple intuitive controls and rugged construction. Downsides to this GPS are limited memory for trips and maps, frequent "freeze-ups" when it will not update location, [...]and EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING BATTERY LIFE!
