I've found that I like energy packs the most, as it is compact and carries a large amount of calories. Probably requires water to ingest. Useful during the run, but I'd take other calories before and after the run.
Clif shots taste the best to me, but it's bulky and only carries 100 calories. Jelly Belly's beans are too sweet and also only 100 calories.
I've also taken GU packs that's been expired for a year. I'm not recommending that, but it still seems to work.
I have used the product before playing soccer and other outdoor activities and it does work better than regular sports drinks. I consume it with water about 20 minutes before activities and every 40 to 60 minutes during and the stuff works to provide your body with some needed fuel.
Tastes good.

I usually bring one with me on all bike rides and occasionally on runs. I typically bike ~2-3 hours at ~18-22 mph. I typically trail run ~1.5-2 hrs at 10-8 min/mi. Gel is good to have around for energy crashes in middle of hard hill rides, or if I forget to eat a good meal that morning. Gives energy for ~30min and reverses most energy crashes if taken at the right time. Not for long-term energy. You could keep taking them every 45 min like the package suggests, but I typically only take one due to the short nature of my normal exercise.
