I also have the headlamp with 4 led, but this one seems brighter. Didn't use it enough to wear out the batteries, but if it is anything like my old one it will take multiple trips on high power.

Decent Headlamp
By MononokeVerified Reviewer from Michigan on 7/14/2008
Cons:
08' Model Not on EMS Site, Inferior to 2008 Model, Not Current Model, Unstable Beam Switch
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Reading in bed
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This is the 2007 Model of the Black Diamond Spot Headlamp. EMS does not have the 2008 Model on the site yet; whereas most other sites do.

Why it matters:
The 2008 model compared to the 2007 model can shine 1.75 times farther AND lasts 2.5 times longer. This is because the 2008 model uses CREE LED's. [confirmed directly from Black Diamond]

2008: 50 hours @ 70 meters Peak
2007: 20 hours @ 40 meters Peak

Very useful for nighttime navigation
By Tub readerVerified Reviewer from Boulder, CO on 7/14/2008
Pros:
Adjustable Beam, Adjustable Brightness, Bright, Durable, Stable
Cons:
A little heavy on forhead
Best Uses:
Car Camping, Nightime hot tub reading
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use the headlamp primarily for nighttime reading. The light does not bother my partner and it illuminates well for reading. It is fabulous for reading outside in the hottub! I found the instructions for dimming the intensity of the light a little complicated at first, but once I understood it was very simple. The hands free aspect of this headlamp is great. It is, however, a little heavy on the forehead.

Bright & Versatile
By WoodbugVerified Reviewer from New Hampshire on 7/14/2008
Pros:
Adjustable Beam, Bright, Long battery life
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Car Camping
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have used the light for car camping and backpacking. The choice between spot (very bright) and floodlight is very useful. The adjustable brightness extends battery life. Switch is very easy to use.

Good Buy!
By DanVerified Reviewer from Belchertown, MA on 7/13/2008
Pros:
Adjustable Beam, Bright, Durable
Best Uses:
Barbeque, Night reading, Outdoor tasks at night
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Originally bought this for hunting but I immediately started to use it at night grilling. My wife doesn't like lights on at night and only uses candles so it works out great for reading or even finding the remote buttons. Great for reading in bed.

super bright, but not waterproof.
By LPVerified Reviewer from Fresno, CA on 11/23/2007
Pros:
Bright, Long battery life, Stable
Cons:
Not waterproof
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Hiking
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The beam is as bright as you can get for a 1 watt bulb, comparable to petzl's xp lights. But there is no rubber seal around battery cover so not submersible in water. It is water resistant to spray and rain though. Overall nice light.

Adjustable Beam, Bright, Durable, Long battery life, Stable
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Climbing, Hiking
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

This is a good headlamp. On spot mode it has a great range. It is easy to use and light. I was thinking about getting one of the more powerful ones, with a battery on the back, but i think i like the compact nature of this one better.

Excellent headlamp
By Dennis - coolbreezeVerified Purchaser from Bear, DE on 2/8/2007
Pros:
Adjustable Beam, Bright, Comfortable, Cool, Stable
Best Uses:
Hiking, running
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my first headlamp and first Black Diamond product. I'm using if for running, light hiking, and general fooling around. I expected to need the Hyberbright the most when running due to its longer beam, but have found the 3 Superbright LEDs are as long as I need it plus has side coverage. And with the tilt feature and secure headband, it is stable and lightweight on my head when running. I could see this lamp exceling in many activities.

Excellent headlamp
By brian from nj on 2/1/2007
Pros:
Bright
Best Uses:
Night Running
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is an excellent headlamp. I use only the spot beam and it is very bright. You are visible from quite a distance to vehicles. I would recommend getting a small light to put on the back of the head strap to make you visible from behind.
