Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
I am a graduate student working with nocturnal frogs. So far this light has done a tremendous job in the field. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because I haven't used it long enough to know long-term cons. I also notice that on the brightest setting when the light is tilted down there is reflection that is somewhat distracting. This is not the case when the beam is adjusted to illuminate a broad area. I should also add that so far I have not even needed the brightest setting...it's that intense.
