This thing does not work. Filled my Camelbak with hot water, the tube still froze. had to abandon the hike halfway up the mountain in ADK state park. Terrible. maybe it will keep my water cold in the summer; i guess i have to wait a few months for further disappointment.

Eastern Mountain Sports Response:I've found this unit to be very helpful in cold and hot temps. When exposed to extreme cold for an extended period you'll want to slip it under your shell for extra protection as it is still a slim tube of water wrapped in a packable insulated thermal sleeve. Our first priority is your complete satisfaction with your Eastern Mountain Sports® purchase.

I think the thermal tube helped for awhile on the climb, but in the end it froze before sumiting Mt Kilimanjaro. The valve leaked after it had frozen and thawed.

Best used in 20F degree + up

In 20 degree F and below the tube still froze up towards day end in the Adirondack High Peaks. You have to be sure to blow the water back into camel bag after each drink & drink frequently to keep the line from frezing in low tempertures. In warm winter wealth it worked fine and I was happy to haave it.

Good except for sub zero

Pros:
Retains temperature well
Best Uses:
Day Trips, skiing

Really good at maintaining temperature. It slows the ice up a whole lot. Lasted about 2 hours in -10F temperatures without drinking before the ice started. The only downside is that its too good. It took like half an hour for the ice in the tube to go away, even in the base lodge! A very worth while investment.

enh!?!!
By el tígreVerified Reviewer from Boulder, CO on 2/5/2007
Pros:
Looks cool
Cons:
Some what slows freezing
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Day trip, Hiking, X-country skiing
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Recent cold weather spurned on need for camelback tube to not freeze. This product only slowed the progress of ice on the drinking tube. When used in 2º F weather it still almost froze. Best defense to keep tube from freezing over is to, still, drink often.

Eastern Mountain Sports Response:True.

Love it - - no frozen tube!
By An EMS addictVerified Reviewer from Niskayuna, NY on 1/17/2007
Pros:
Does not freeze up, Love the flip lid cover, Retains temperature well
Cons:
None yet
Best Uses:
Anything when temps drop, Backpacking, Day trip, Hiking
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Hydration is too important to leave to chance when heading into the highpeaks of the Adirondacks -- the tube and bite valve on my Nalgene freeze solid... not good. I popped this insulated replacement tube with flip cap onto an old Camelback bladder from my MULE and put it to the test last week on an overnighter -- it worked perfectly and never froze up. The true test remains when the temps drop below 0 -- then we'll see if my review needs an amendment.

hydrate or die
By JulesVerified Reviewer from NY on 1/2/2007
Pros:
doesn't leak easily, Good grip, Retains temperature well
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Day trip, Hiking

when used properly, this product shines! never have a frozen bite valve again.

Don't bother
By Winter hydratorVerified Purchaser from Boulder, Co on 12/27/2006
Pros:
You get bite valve cover
Cons:
Barely slows down ice-up
Best Uses:
Nite camo

Barely delays the onset of tube or bite valve ice-up.
If outside temp is below freezing, still must drink every few minutes to keep ice from forming... if you forget for 10 minutes, it's frozen up.
