Love the flip top for drinking but if you were to put it in a backpack it would flip open and spill everywhere! Great water bottle if you are looking for something to use in your daily life or at the gym. Just make sure it is always upright!

Lid Problems

Pros:
Good Capacity, Good grip
Cons:
Breakable, Loose lid
Best Uses:
Day Trips
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I like this water bottle, however, the lid is not secure. After a few uses it has a hard time staying closed and spills often. I love the brand, and still have the bottle, I just don't take it anywhere where it could possibly spill.
It would depend on how you wanted to use the product, but the lid is not secure.

I received this as a gift and while I love it, I also hate it. I own a ton of water bottles including the classic Nalgenes. This is the only one that actually fits in my car's cup holder (yet has a decent capacity) so no more rolling around in the car. I also love the ring for quick and easy gripping or carabiner clipping. The classic Nalgenes' plastic rings have always snapped over time. And like my other bottles, I can still gulp down water though the opening is relatively smaller (which means less chance of dribbling). What I hate is the snap top. It can be rather difficult to snap it open when I need it, yet if it drops, it always drops on the head in such a way as to pop open and spill its contents. Otherwise, it doesn't leak a bit. I'm also wondering whether the bit of plastic that keeps the lid shut will wear down over time. I'm already seeing the plastic deforming from multiple uses and it's only been a month. I think there needs to be a slight redesign, but if not for these annoying cons, I would really love this bottle.

I have owned every Nalgene product ever manufactured and this one is by far my favorite. I disagree with those individuals that complain about the bottle leaking. I own Six of these bottles (I rotate them throughout the day) and they haven't leaked a drop. I've turned them upside down...shaken them and still nothing. I do, however, attach it to my daypack with a carabiner clip. If I use a backpack (daily use) I simply place it in the outside area meant for a water bottle. It would not be my first choice, however, for overnight backpacking and I probably would not place it inside a pack. If anything were going to continuously rub against the cap, it could pop it open.

This product spills everywhere. It might as well be a regular glass. You never want to bring it with you. It does not fit in my cup holder in my car either. Go with the more traditional version of a Nalgene bottle if you plan on buying one.

Not recommended
By PhillVerified Purchaser from Wilmington DE on 8/22/2007
Pros:
Unbreakable
Cons:
Loose lid, Spills
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational

I would not recommend this bottle. During one of my first uses, it was in the side pocket of my pack, and when I set it down, it brushed up against something that flipped the lid open, and all of the contents spilled out. A redesign is called for that makes the lid less prone to popping open. In the meantime, I recommend the Camelback bite valve bottle [...] as a better option. Its design avoids spills it two ways. First, the bite valve doesn't leak. But, even if it did, (which it doesn't in my experience), the straw it is attached to takes fluid from the bottom of the bottle, limiting any leakage to a small portion of the bottle's contents.

Best bottle ever
By Nicky the Water GuzzlerVerified Reviewer from Portsmouth, NH on 1/16/2007
Pros:
Convenient, Good grip, Retains temperature well, Stylish, Unbreakable
Best Uses:
Day trip, Gym, Road Trips, Work

I love this bottle so much. I received one from my job (I work at ThermoFisher and they gave us all one with our logo when we merged). I keep it on my nightstand because I get thirsty at night. The locking top makes it portable and really convenient.

My boyfriend also drinks from it at night and he loves it too. I ordered two additional bottles, one for him and one more for me. Now I keep one at work and take the other one with my everywhere. My boyfriend keeps his at work, he says he likes to carry it around with him because of the nifty loop at the top; he swings it around on his finger. I got one in pink for me and blue for him and they are so cute.

My favorite thing about them (besides the top) is that they are a perfect 3 glasses, so it makes it really easy for me to keep track of how much water I'm drinking and reach my goal of 9-12 glasses everyday. I also love having water with me at all times, I can snap the top shut and toss it in my purse without worrying about leaks - wonderful!

Great product, I wouldn't change a thing! I will probably buy more of them as gifts for my friends and family.

OTG...perfect, unless you drop things
By Dj PuddlesVerified Reviewer from Wakefield, RI on 11/1/2006
Pros:
Good grip, Retains temperature well, Unbreakable
Cons:
Loose lid, Spills
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Day trip, Hiking

I recently lost my trusty Nalgene after a wonderful three year courtship. Upon first viewing, I fell in love with the OTG. Slightly confused by how the top opened and closed I decided put my blind faith in the genius of the NALGENE Co. [...]and the next day I had the OTG in my hands. Upon examination of the top, I discovered that the opening/closing mechanism of choice appears to be a plastic clip. Yes, a plastic clip. Now I don't have any problems with plastic...or clips but seriously every time I drop this thing there's a fifty percent chance of it opening. Somebody in the engineering department needs to be fired...hahahaha plastic yes. To be fair however, the design is amazing beyond the plastic clip. One hand easily opens and closes and the grip fits beautifully in my hands.

SUMMARY: The OTG is like a fine woman with a tendency to break down when stressed.

Great for on the go! Not for expeditions
By dgraf8Verified Reviewer from Orlando, FL on 11/1/2006
Pros:
Good grip
Cons:
Loose lid, Spills
Best Uses:
Car Camping, Class, Work

This is an excellent bottle for around the house, on campus, on a day trip, or in the office. Good size, unbreakable body (lid is breakable), and easy to drink. If you drop it, the lid will pop and the liquid will spill. If you tip it upside-down, it will leak (after about a week of use). This does not make it ideal for backpacking, climbing, or other expeditions with alot of movement.

Love it
By Mountain MamaVerified Reviewer from Newton, NJ on 10/3/2006
Pros:
Fits in bike water holder, Fits in car cup holder, Good grip, Good sipping top, Unbreakable
Cons:
Wish it held more
Best Uses:
Car Camping, Day trip

Overall a great bottle. My only complaint is that it's only 20oz capacity. I really miss those extra ounces on hot days or long walks.
