I bought this filter for a trip to Yosemite in September. It worked well for the first few bottles of water, but then it began to shoot water out of a release valve which greatly slowed the rate that the water could be filtered. The water that I was filtering was crystal clear, so I don't think that the filter was clogged. I would not recommend this filter. It may be intended for occassional, very low volume use.

Eastern Mountain Sports Response:Of course we hate to hear you are disappointed with your MSR Sweetwater Purifier. These filters have a long history of being well made, easy to use, and durable in the field. We will take this opportunity to shine the light on our Satisfaction Guarantee. Which is…Our first priority is your complete satisfaction with your Eastern Mountain Sports® purchase. If you are dissatisfied for any reason and have your original store receipt or web invoice, we will exchange or repair the item in question or provide a full refund. That said…You can always reach us here in Customer Service at 888.463.6367 if we can assist you in any way. With regard to your experience…it sounds like an o-ring or something else in the pump house is missing or has been dislodged. Some suggestions…you can…a) take apart and put the unit back together if you feel comfortable doing so…b) take it to a retail location to have a shop employee work on it…c) send it back and get a replacement…and d) if you need a purifier, stick with the Sweetwater, and if not, consider an alternative higher volume type filter…such as the Katadyn Vario or the Hiker Pro. The Vario would give you the ability to get some finer particulate matter out of the water with its ceramic piece…but if you are drawing water in and around glaciers the Hiker Pro would be a better choice.

We bought this product to use for an upcoming trip to new Mexico. We haven't had the chance to try it there yet but we have tried it while hiking locally and it works great.

I was excited to finally be able to abandon the undesirable after-taste of tablets, and the water from the SweetWater Purifier Water Filter by MSR is tasty, clean, and well worth the price of admission. The item is a tad bulky and takes a few moments to set up, but once you get going it doesn't take long to fill multiple bottles and have peace of mind about your drinking water. Well worth it.

This filtered water real well. A few freinds and I went on a week elk hunt on the Continental Divide and a few times couldn't find a nice water sourse. You wouldn't believe some of the water we ended up filtering. We all had our doubts, but this unit did fine. It was a hassle cleaning almost after every pump, but worked well and water tasted great. No one got sick and we filtered some real nasty water.

The sweat water system does not leave a bad aftertaste, after the first use I was amazed by the fact that my water from home ( public ) had more chlorine in it. Works great

So-So
By Deacsmitty from Saratoga Spring, NY on 2/7/2007
Pros:
Easy to clean, Good filtration, Lightweight, Water tastes good
Cons:
Hard to pump, Needs cleaning constantly
Best Uses:
Backpacking, Car Camping, Day trip, Hiking

I used this with my friend on a week long trip and it worked perfectly fine w/o any need to clean. I purchased mine and it needs alot of cleaning. I wasn't sure why but it does. It also has a release valve that shoots water out when the filter is clogged. Also it is hard to pump; you get tired easy. All in all is a good pump if you are able to keep it mantained.

Pump works, it just seems to get clogged after pumping only 1 liter of Florida water. Will have to wait to see if works any better outside of Florida when I have a chance.
