No, I would not recommend this to a friend
This is a fine day pack, but do not be misled by any claims to it serving as an acceptable overnight backpack for a child. There is not enough room to handle the usual requirements for a child camper/hiker. However, if used as the equivalent of a large fanny pack it should work fine. A day hike, yes ... backpacking, no.
