There's more to this self-inflating sleeping pad than what you can see. Within the shell, die-cut patterns throughout the foam help to speed up inflation/deflation while also minimizing weight. The Trail Crash Pad is a great value and offers an appealing combo of insulation, cushioning, and lightweight performance.

I purchased this product August 2001. It was stored flat under a bed with valve open when not in use, which was virtually the entire time I owned it. I slept on it no more than 20 nights. Last weekend I slept on it and discovered a seam had come apart. I[...]the store did replace the pad for me. However I'm not so sure I want another of the same kind since by reading the other reviews here and my own experience indicate that seam failure is not uncommon to this pad.

Eastern Mountain Sports Response:Thanks for the review...your concerns are understood and valid. We did have some issues with these pads early in their existence...however substantial changes have been made to them over the past few years. We’ve incorporated new valves, materials and construction. We’re confident you can store this one under your bed for as long as you’d like and not repeat the misfortune of your former pad. Any questions or further concern on your part…let us know at 888.463.6367.

Used the product several times (less than 10) over a few years (less than 5). Went to use it this week and found that the seam had opened. It has been stored inside my home, with valve open and flat as instructed. Unable to repair with repair kit, and I no longer have my receipt. Very disappointed.

Its a Good Pad , Have had it for 2yrs and found it very slippery, heavy. If you do not have straps to attach your sleeping bag to the pad you will end up on the ground by morning. Just recently The foam has separated from the shell material not a good thing all considering I have only used the pad 8 times in its 2yr life. [...] On a good note it has never leaked, easy to pack, and it self-inflates flaw less.

Eastern Mountain Sports Response:The slippery issue has been a constant battle with most inflatable pads…Thermarest made a non slip spray for awhile and sleeping bags started coming with strap systems to hold the pads in place. Big Agnes is a company currently making sleeping bags that you can slide the pad right into a readied sleeve. The foam separating from the nylon is a different story, I’ve only known it too happen when a pad is exposed to extreme heat…but if you feel the pad has been taken care of then we’ll be happy to take care of you as this should not happen.

Ok Pad
By Sleeping CoyoteVerified Reviewer from NY on 11/7/2006
Comfort:
Chafes, Slippery, Too Hot
Length:
Feels true to length
Pros:
Durable
Cons:
Bulky, Heavy
Best Uses:
Car Camping

This is an OK pad. I have had it for years and not one hole in it. Down sides to this pad: Its heavy, surface is very slippery you tend to fall off the pad alot unless you have sleeping pad clips on your sleeping bag, If your a side sleeper even the 1.5in of thickness will stop your shoulder from digging into the ground, after awhile even stored properly it will not self inflate, and recently the foam has separated from the plastic(pros: it separated by my shoulder and I'm able to sleep on my side comfortably with 2.5in of air supporting it). If your a car camper this is a great pad if your a serious backpacker don't bother with it get your self a therma rest ridge rest.
