Though other reviewers complained and said that airlines didn't allow the shoulder strap I had no problem with US Airways. The shoulder strap helped me, was not a problem, and so I had no desire to cut it off. My wife and I traveled to Costa Rica so it was very helpful in protecting my backpack while also giving me lots of extra space to pack other things. During our travels one girl asked where I got the bag b/c she wanted one to protect her backpack so I was proud to pass on that I bought it through EMS. I also really liked how it zips into its own carrying bag. Our other bag doesn't do that so instead of clipping it to the outside of our pack like we did with the EMS one, we had to pack our other one into our backpacks which took up a lot of space. So I love that feature. Plus, it was a lot cheaper than our other bag which is a different brand.

I already had one of these i use as pack cover for travel. I bought this one to use for organizing and stowing gear in roof rack cargo box. Also, needed a large capacity bag that folds up small into own pocket, to take along on trip to bring back some things I plan on buying. These bags work well as checked luggage, except the shoulder strap doesn't detach. Nice versatile water resistant durable pack cover/ gear bag.
Very happy with this product
Bought this for a trip to Europe in May, 2007. Based on previous reviews of this product, I cut off the shoulder strap and used a removable strap instead.
Ironically, I forgot to take off the removable strap, but it went through just fine. Tried it purposely on the return flight too - bag was lost in Frankfurt, but didn't have any problems with the strap.
If buying new, I'd leave the built-in strap attached - airports seem to have improved their equipment.
As a side note, two others in our group sent their backpacks through without totes, and it seemed to work ok. But when my pack finally arrived from Frankfurt via FedEx, there were several scrapes and a bunch of dirt on the tote - glad those weren't on my brand new pack. I'll definitely use the tote next time too.
Only one (minor) complaint - there's only 1 size of tote - since my pack is an Osprey Aether 70 (4200cu.in.), there was a LOT of extra room in the tote - a smaller size would have been nice.

This will be used to transport a backpack on an overseas flight. the only problem will be the strap. Because the airlines do not allow the straps and the only way to remove is to cut off...The design would be better if you could remove.

The travel tote is a very good product with one flaw. The carrying strap was sewed into the pack and is not removable. The first thing that is asked at the airport check-in desk is to remove any straps so the bag will not snag on the transport macinary. I had to cut the strap and buy a new one prior to my trip. The strang thing is there are fasteners on the bag to attach an additional strap.
Besides that - it worked great in holding my pack and other camping items on a recent trip to British Columbia.
