I own around 26 duffles from Eagle Creek, Eddie Bauer, and EMS (my EMS bags are from 1993 and still alive ang going strong after more than 50 intercontinental trips).
Two years ago I purchased an XL stash duffle on sale, after shunning its high retail price. That bag has made around eight round trips between the US East Coast and West Africa (where I work with the UN peacekeeping operations), in addition to transcontinental US and European trips. It has held up well, considering that I pack it close to 70 lbs each time. I could pack more in it, but the airlines allow only 70 lbs at most nowadays. I also love its relatively light weight.
Recognizing that it is not the toughest duffle on the market, I double it up with another similar-sized bag for added security and peace of mind. After all, it weighs around 1.5 lbs less than more-expensive XXL bags yet offers equivalent capacity. In that way, I have an extra bag when needed.
I recently bought another XL, also on sale. The bottom line is that I find its retail price to be expensive for its features, but it is a great buy at 25% off. I wish EMS would review their pricing structure on this item without sacrificing quality. I would snap up several more XLs and a handful of Ls.
This bag tore open on my first flight with it. [...] Do not buy this bag if you're looking for durability.I just graduated college and I commute a lot between my new home Vail CO and my old one in VT. I climb, snowboard, mt. bike, kayak, surf, etc. and I needed a bag that would take incredible abuse(especially at the airlines) as I adventured. I wanted the north face base camp duffle because my boyfriend has had his for 10 years and traveled the world as a surfer/nordic racer. [...]was out of TNF base camp and convinced me that this bag would do the trick. The fabric had a huge rip in the bottom after the first flight. The rip was obviously caused by the fabric snagging on something like a nail. Luckily, I didn't lose any of my stuff since it's such a big bag I couldn't pack anything but clothes or I'd be over the weight limit. This bag was fine to throw in the trunk of a car just to hold all my stuff in one place but the fabric can't take much abuse.
This bag is great for holding camping and hiking equipment. Plenty of room, excellent quality. Perfect for so many uses.
I needed a big bag for snowboarding trips. This bag just fits all
Awesome bag that is HUGE... this is more of a hockey bag and not a carry-on for air travel unless you plan on checking your luggage. Only thing I can say negative about it is I wish the clips that hold the shoulder strap were metal and not plastic. That said - I loaded it up a few weeks back and the plastic clips held just fine.
