I used these poles for an overnight climb in VT recently and we received 6" of new snow in mid-May. These poles were invaluable while navigating the snow covered rocks & boulders and also for our decent. I chose them specifically for their light weight. Sometimes one or the other would collapse, possibly due to not tightening them enough.

Good, but tighten periodically

Bought these for a trip to Zion NP. The narrows were closed, so didn't get to try them in the water, but used them on the rocky trails. The weight is great, but I wasn't thrilled with the joints. If you buy these, make sure you tighten the joints periodically. Twice a pole collapsed on me when I needed to lean on it heavily. I got in the habit of tightening them before challenging terrain. The adjustable wrist straps are a nice touch, but a locking mechanism would improve them. The straps loosened up when going uphill and under pressure. The palm side of the grips have ridges on them that after hiking for a while in the heat irritated my sweaty hands. Maybe it wouldn't be an issue in cool weather hiking.

Freeze in cold weather

These are really nice lightweight poles that can take a beating. I have gotten them stuck in rocks and in deep snow and have not had them break! My only complaint is that in really cold weather they tend to freeze up which makes it difficult to adjust the length. They do compress to a nice small size which makes it easy to put on the back of your pack when you don't need them.

Pretty nifty
By cranberry blueVerified Purchaser from international on 12/3/2006

Flexible, Good grips, Lightweight

My first time with store bought trekking poles and now I wonder how I lived without them all those miles ! Tested a number of poles instore and these came out tops, price, weight and height was important. I am 5 foot 5 and don't need to carry a pole made for a 6 foot tall man.
Once on the trail I was impressed. The height adjusted easily and quickly, the grip was perfect for my hands and the poles absorbed shock significantly as I scrambled down rocky slopes.
Added to this the colour although sickening at first meant I didn't leave the poles behind after rest stops.
One thing, the compass just never worked, they should let that feature go. If you are heading to the wilds the first thing to buy is a decent compass don't rely on this one.
