use these pole for hiking in the adirondack mountians of new york. they have performed beyond my expectations and I have had no problems with them. If you have experienced knee concerns when coming down mountian terrain these will help if not eliminate the problem, it did for me. I would recommend them above other makes that I have owned

I first used the Super Makalu poles on my climb of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. The terrain varied from bogs and muddy trails to small waterfalls and wide streams. Plus side - strong, VERY lightweight, great grips, adjusted easily, compact size when collapsed. Minus side - the lower portion of my left pole slowly slipped/collapsed a few times during my 9 hour trek. I know I rotated it enough times to lock the mechanism. Perhaps the terrain itself and the torque on the pole from regular use caused it to unlock. Maybe it was defective. Will have to call EMS on this one. Either way, I still like the poles. They beat other ones I've used. Worth the price.

Some Concerns with Soft Anti-Shock and W

The first use of my new Super Makalu w/ soft anti-shock was on a climb of two of the Adirondack 4000 ft Mts - Street and Nye. First, when a pole got struck in a bush or crevice, jerking my arm back, the wrist strap would pull taught and open the strap locking lever on top of the handle. The strap loop would then loosen and I would have to stop and readjust the strap. This happened several times. Second, it takes alot of turning to lock the pole sections, which is a pain when you want to change the length from going uphill to going downhill. Two or three times the poles collapsed without warning and I would have to retighten a section. Also, once when a pole caught in a bush and I pulled on it, the lower section almost pulled all the way out. For some reason the sections wouldn't stay tightened. I have great respect for Leki and have owned a Sierra trekking pole for years with no problems. I just was not pleased with the Super Makalu soft anti-shock poles.

Eastern Mountain Sports Response:So concerns are legitmate and surprising...as Leki makes a great product and hopefully you will not lose faith in them. We'd suggest exchanging them for another pair and giving them a second chance. They are great poles...and should be working properly. Our first priority is your complete satisfaction with your Eastern Mountain Sports® purchase.
