Only one snowstorm since I got these, so haven't used them a lot. I expect snowshoes to be snug with thick socks, but I first tried these on w/ just liner socks and they were painfully tight even though they were supposedly my size. I wore them around the house off and on for a bit till they finally were more comfortable. When I actually used them in the snowstorm, they worked great, waterproof, warm and good traction.
would not buy very squeaky when walking
everything is good on it
The boots are great for the snow. I was a little disapointed with the traction, I figured a company that makes a multitude of winter sports products would have a more effective tread pattern for the snow. Besides that, they are dry, warm and stylish as far as winter foot wear is concerned.
I live in one of the hottest states in the country, Arizona, and normally I would have no use for something like this. However, I recently took a trip to Pennsylvania for two weeks, and I wanted some nice warm, comfortable, winter boots. I basically stepped off the plane, and wore these books for two weeks straight! I did everything in them from walk around the house, take the dogs for long walks on icey streets & snowy wooded areas, to hiking in 6" of freshly fallen snow on the appalachian trail. These boots far exceeded any expectations I had. They required no break in period. They were so comfy that it was a pleasure to put them on my feet. They were extremely warm! I had good traction, and was able to walk around an entire day in Philidelphia with little discomfort. I would definitely recommend these boots to a friend!
I winter hike in these boots (on the A.T.) just about everyday since getting them a month ago. The break in period was minimal; they've been comfortable since day 1. Definetely waterproof. I've worn gaiters everytime there was deep snow and with MicroSpikes (great!) in some nasty ice. My biggest gripe are the laces. They come untied, sometimes even when double knotted. The glass 1/2 full view is that they come off easily because of the slick laces...
like these boots a lot, very light and easy to put on, the traction isn't the best (on packed down snow, icy conditions) but it's a small negative, i would purchase salomon boots again and buy from EMS too.
p.s. the boots i got didn't have the grey inside liner and laces, all black and actually happy about that, looks way nicer.
My favorite three things about these boots are: (1) they are VERY light-weight, (2) comfortable and warm, and (3) they look snazzy. Also, taking the boots on/off is quick & easy (however you need to double-knot the laces because they're slippery). The only problem with these boots is a very audible "squeak" sound when you walk. But other than this I absolutely love them. The other tradeoff is the low ankle rise on the very back of the boot, which means these boots are not for deep snow; however this low cut provides more comfort for day-to-day wear. I haven’t yet tested the traction on more challenging terrains. Also, I wonder if I will not enjoy them during warmer-weather day hikes, since they are designed for winter wear.
