I have used this jacket during winter camping/hiking, and it works great as a windbreaker and a shell to keep you warm during hiking. I have also used it for casual use during rainstorms, and it is great! It keeps me warm and dry, and has good coverage (hood, back length, sleeve length). The zipper is hard to zip, especially in cold weather, which can be a pain. It also has no hand pockets (only two Napoleon pockets). Once I got used to this feature, I actually liked it better!
I was considering returning the jacket because I have to stuggle with the zipper every time I were the coat. For the over priced cost that I paid I should LOVE the coat, other wise I would have bought an [...] rain coat for [$].
Bought one last summer and used it constantly on 2 trips to Newfoundland with its wet and windy weather, as well as here in ME. Wore it kayaking as well as hiking, When they went on sale, I bought another to stash away for when I wear this one out. It's lightweight, easy to stuff in a pack or dry bag without wrinkling, After trying them on, I ended up buying an extra-large so I could layer under it--normally would wear a medium. That way, with a fleece jacket or down vest, I was ready for anything, Great color for fall visibility (oxblood).
I wish it had at least one interior secure zip pocket big enough for keys, a bee kit, or a wallet.

I like this jacket as far as rain protection. The front pockets are set next to the zipper high up on the body so you cannot put your hands in the pockets unless you crossed your arms. The only problem with this jacket is the zipper does not latch easily to start the zipper at the bottom.
First, tried my usual size--and it was way too small to layer. Then I exchanged up to the extra-large, which was perfect (I'm about size 12) to fit fleece or a down vest under--and I took that jacket traveling all over Newfoundland this fall. It was light for airplane carryon, perfect for fall hiking with frequent downpours and high winds on both coasts of Newfoundland, sleek enough to wear to town for concerts, small enough to crush in a daypack and come out unwrinkled for later. I love it so much I'm buying another one on sale to stash away for when this one gets worn out. My favorite color, too--

I take this jacket with me on every hike or backpack trip. It's an almost perfect jackets, except the wrist cuffs are not elastic and fit so tight that I have to remove my gloves to take the jacket off in cold weather. Other than that, there are a LOT of great things about this jacket:
- It's very lightweight and folds up very small to fit in the bungee on the outside of my backpack.
- The pit zips provide excellent ventilation.
- The pockets are placed perfectly for access while wearing my backpack. The sleeve pocket is perfect for easy access to my lip balm.
- The roomy cut allows me to put thermal layers underneath during cold weather.
- The hood is big enough to fit over a hat but cinches down small if needed.
- It is long enough to provide good coverage and doesn't ride up under my backpack.
- The red color is great for visibility during bad weather or hunting season.

I primarily use the jacket and pants to take my retriever for long walks in the rain. It has been great for that. I stay dry, and she gets as wet as she likes (lots).
