We go to the beach several times a year, and we purchased this bike rack almost purely to take our bikes to the beach. As my wife has a beach cruiser (I have a mountain bike), I did a lot of research trying to find the perfect bike rack. I couldn't decide upon a platform carrier or a frame carrier. The deciding factor was that with a frame carrier, most women's bikes, but especially beach cruisers, need a frame adapter in order to let the bike sit properly on the rack. With this platform carrier, the bike sits on the platform with ease. !!One item to note, is that with beach cruisers, the front fender can not come down over the wheel, or this rack will not work with it!! Another reason we purchased this rack is that my wife can lift the bikes to put them on it, as opposed to the fact that she would have trouble lifting the bikes onto a frame rack.
The only cons I have noted with this rack are that it is extremely heavy (my wife can barely pick it up) and it only comes with 3 cylinder locks (when it needs 5). The weight of the rack is expected/welcomed though, because for the price you are paying, you want something that will hold up for years to come. The cylinder locks were also an easy fix, as I ordered two additional locks directly from Thule using the same lock code, and therefore, the key that came with the racks fits the 2 additional locks I purchased separately.
Bottom line, is that although this rack is expense, it is very heavy duty and will last for years to come. There is a good chance that I won't ever need to purchase another rack (and I'm only 27).
