Comments about Petzl 1020962 PETZL GriGri 2 Descender:
Way nicer design than the original, pretty light, nice color. I really only use this for long belays, when the leader likes to take long and/or frequent rests, when the leader is likely to fall, and belaying followers. Also nice for self belays. Annoyingly you basically must remove the grigri from your biner to run the rope through, so it's not as fast as running rope through an ATC.
Overall, it has its uses. I still use my ATC for most belaying, and never use the grigri at the gym. So now I just carry around both the ATC and the grigri, because extra weight makes you stronger! I bought it on sale as an impulse purchase... probably would not buy it at full price. An ATC is $20....
Pros
- Light
Cons
- none
Best Uses
- Sport Climbing
- Top roping
- Trad climbing
Comments about Petzl 1020962 PETZL GriGri 2 Descender:
The original GriGri I had was made in 1993 and continues to work perfectly. I made the switch to the GriGri 2 based mainly on the lighter weight, and the ability to handle thinner ropes.
The improvements are truly amazing. The GriGri 2 is so light that I now bring it trad climbing. The other real bonus is the lowering, it is much more predictable and smooth than the original Gri Gri.
Great Job Petzl.

Comments about Petzl 1020962 PETZL GriGri 2 Descender:
Yes, Petzl did have a recall on the GriGri 2, however the quality of this product is un-matched by any of its competitor's. There are few auto-locking belay devices on the market, but Petzl has set the standard and will continue to make quality products such as the GriGri 2.

Comments about Petzl 1020962 PETZL GriGri 2 Descender:
The GriGri 2 is a great device - and I have used it extensively before selling mine. A few things that I did not like about them is:*Cost - very pricey*Weight - still heavy tho the new version is lighter than the GriGri 1*Recalls by Petzl - both the GriGri 1 & GriGri 2 models have had recalls. One can't help but worry when Petzl will 'get it right' and if existing models that were not recalled will also be found unsafe / defective still.I sold mine in lieu of a simple, lighter and less costly ATC tube device which hasn't experienced recalls, costs [$] and is nearly weightless.
Pros
- Lighter
- Much smoother descending
- Much smoother lowering
- Shiny
- Smaller
Cons
- Really expensive
Best Uses
- Sending it
- Shredding the gnar
Comments about Petzl 1020962 PETZL GriGri 2 Descender:
Great ASSISTED braking belay device. Petzl improved the flaws of the previous model by the ability to use skinnier ropes and a more easy to find "sweet spot" for lowering/rappeling

Merchant response: Thank you for your review. We agree it is a great device, however all recall issues have been resolved and Petzl is well known in the industry for having some of the most rigorous testing of their equipment. All GriGri2’s on the market pass the strictest of safety requirements. The GriGri is one of the most graphically simple devices to use. If you follow the instructions for use, there is virtually no room for error. Further, comparing a GriGri2 to an ATC isn’t quite fair, as they both have their own advantages/disadvantages, which is why we find most climbing guides carrying both while out working on the cliffs.
