Don't be fooled by the waterproof label. These boots are about as waterproof as a sponge. They are completely unsuitable for any level of hiking other than on a dry sidewalk.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
These are my first hiking boots and I just fell in love with them!!! I don't have experience about hiking into the mountains, rivers or places like those, but I really love to walk a lot, anytime and anywhere, so I do have experience with that and I can tell you that these are the best boots I've ever had until now, they are very comfortable and light. I bought them because I'm from a hot weather place (Mexico), and I arrived to Newark (DE) on winter, so I needed special footwear to keep me warm and for walking in the light snow. It's been 5 months since then and my boots have been great. Maybe they are not the best for pro uses, but I can tell you that mine have been great for everyday walking, they kept me warm when I need it, and dry on the light snow. Now I use them less because it's summer now and it's really hot outside, but I prefeer them for long distance walks. I really recomend them as your first hiking boots and/or everyday footware.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
I give this boot two stars instead of one because my bad experience with them is largely the fault of EMS and not entirely the boot. All of my issues could have been resolved with better fitting and selection advisement. The associate that helped me pick these boots took measurements of the length of my foot and gave me a size 8; at no point were width measurements taken or considered. When trying on the boot, I commented that it felt cramped to which the associate replied that it is supposed to feel snug so I thought I'd give the tight fit a chance. Also, given my input that I usually embark on day hikes through the White Mountains, the associate suggested these lighter, softer boots (probably only hearing the "day hike" part of my description).
Just wearing these boots during the drive to the Whites proved unbearable after 4 hours. I loosened the laces to relieve the feeling of being subjected to foot binding torture and I left them relatively loose like this for the rest of the day, resulting in toe banging. It gets worse. I felt every jagged edge of rock through the soles of these boots. Stepping into a crevasse or between two rocks results in the boots crushing my foot like a taco. I have sneakers that are stiffer than these boots.
In the end, make sure the EMS staff take width into consideration when fitting your boots; if they don't, they probably regularly work in a different department and are just filling in for someone that knows what they are doing. Second, don't use these boots for anything other than walking on dirt or even pavement; which are tasks best suited to shoes, not boots. Gravel, rocks, and uneven terrain will go right through these.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
Very comfortable and good fit for my narrow foot. Flat footbed is good for inserted arch support. Sole is too flexible for rocky scrambling, and likely too flexible for heavy loads. Water resistance has been good, but not seriously tested.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
My review would be more positive if I only hiked in dry conditions. They have been very comfortable from the start and nice and light. I've got two points of criticism: first is that outer sole traction on smooth rock is marginal to poor (minor criticism) and second is that they are not even remotely waterproof despite the "waterproof" label and Goretex construction. Hiking where there's occasional calf-high wet grass will soak these boots through and through after one mile.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
Look, you have a great shoe here. I have been in Merrell's for over ten years and highly recommend them to my Boy Scout leaders BUT can't you please figure out the laces??? The laces should be tied in one knot and hold but they don't, I have to always tie two knots (like we do for our 4 year olds) to keep them from loosening up. It is the little things like this that is a PIT[*]. I have purchased over 20 pairs...that is right...2 every year and for 10 years and your laces have not performed like the shoe does. BTW, out of 40 shoes, I had one the other day where the lace loop broke...interesting for a year old.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
General weekend wear and woods and field walks with the dogs. Comfortable right away, and an excellent fit for my narrow foot (13C.) Waterproof, and good traction. I removed the heel loop - it wasn't necessary and my pants hung up on it.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
I have used these boots for a year now. Once you coat them with Nikwax, they are actually quite waterproof. The boot does not contour to the slope my foot to my toes and I can't get past that. It feels like the tongue needs to be pulled up all the time even though it stays in place. I will have to get another boot. I've never had this complaint with any other boot before so I don't feel it is me! Other than that, the boot is durable and works as advertised. I've worn it down to 20 degrees with no problems at all as long as you're generating heat.

Comments about Merrell 1020631 MERRELL Men's Moab Mid WP Hiking Boots:
I've been wearing Merrells now for a few years. I like the Chameleon slip-ons, but needed a heavier hiking boot when my old ones went. I hike regularly: four-to-six mile jaunts, in any season, and knew right away, the Moabs must be Merrell's go-to hiking shoe. They are warm (using them now for winter), comfortable, light-weight, offer solid support, and have great treads. What's also cool is you can begin wearing them right out of the box.
Just can't speak yet about their durability in general. Or about the waterproofing, though they held up recently in cold snow.
In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with this shoe.

Merchant response: Thank you for your review. These boots certainly should be waterproof because of the waterproof breathable membrane in them. If you think they might be defective please return them via our Return Policy.
