Comments about Spot 1022878 SPOT Connect Personal Locator Beacon:

I have read many, many reviews of this product prior to buying and was nervous based on so many complaints. Mine works consistantly, but i have experienced what i can see is leading to so many negative reviews. It has to be initiated in a "SPECIFIC" way, or it fails to connect. I have used it successfully with both an iPhone 3s and a 4s, using the latest spot connect app update, and hooked up the device via usb and downloaded the latest firmware. First turn on bluetooth on phone, then press and hold power button on spot until blue (bluetooth) light starts to flash, then i tap spot connect on my iphones bluetooth menu and it connects everytime. then i start the spot connect app, and it all links. YES, if you happen to mistakenly open app first, prior to turning on and linking bluetooth on phone first you WILL get a locked up and non linking mess. You WILL need to do a hard close (by deleting from the bottom tray) and maybe even restart the phone (holding both bottons for 5 seconds). BUT if done in that specific order listed above it WORKS EVERY time.

Now onto the device review. It is awesome! I have set up several pre-programmed msgs and have used both the pre-programmed msgs as well as typed custom msgs on the trail and all worked flawlessly. I was in the Adirondack high peaks, for several nights, 10 hours from cell service and this device worked as advertised. I also had the tracking setting on so that every ten minutes it would send our position out for anyone to view on a webpage, showing breadcrumb like dots on a google terrain map. Very cool. ALSO...should be noted..that you can send a msg, or turn on tracking setting and still turn off your phone (to conserve battery) and the unit will continue to track or send that msg until it receives its next instruction. Your iPhone does NOT need to stay on for this to operate. Last two comments...The batteries last a long time, i left unit on for three days straight in 15 degree weather (my gps and headlamp were dying quick due to temps...and this device always worked, must just have a minimal power requirement.) And lastly...for all those who complain about the device being useless in an emergency because they cant figure out how to sync it, lets not forget if everything else fails, and phone gets wet/destroyed...there is a red button on side of spot connect that can always be pressed for help, it works independantly of phone.

I rely on reviews so i felt it neccessary to give my 2 cents here. people are quick to blame others, i think i even read about a "class action lawsuit"...its comical really. If you are having problems making this cutting edge piece of technology work with your smart phone, maybe the user needs to be ugraded?

Comments about Spot 1022878 SPOT Connect Personal Locator Beacon:

Product tracked most of the time. It had two gaps where it didn't send. My first message that I sent to my family was never delivered. It did send my second message to my family and posted it on Facebook. It sent coordinates. I liked being able to export my trip to Spot Adventures, document things I learned and add pictures.I'll have to figure out what to do with my cell phone's battery life going down quickly even though it was in Airplane Mode most of the time. I took my Droid out of airplane mode to check my status. It took too long to turn back on if I turned it off completely so I only turned it off completely a few times.
