Brooks worked with Scott Jurek to develop the Pure Grit, a lightweight trail runner with a concave one-piece outsole—when forces are applied, the outsole splays out to enhance balance and traction.

Very comfortable and well cushioned without being too mushy. They feels like slippers. Great minimalist shoe for trail running. I've only had them for a couple weeks and haven't taken them out on rugged trails yet, just some rooty, packed dirt trails, so I can't speak for their capabilities on more aggressive terrain. But so far, I love them. The tread doesn't look like they could withstand much road running. I wish they had this same shoe with a more appropriate road tread. I'd buy that too.

I purchased these shoes to find out what the minimal shoe craze was all about, though these still have a 4mm heel bead, a formed arch, and do not have formed toes like barefoot shoes. They do have very roomy toe space, which is meant to allow the toes to spread out naturally. I find them quite comfortable, lightweight, flexible, and stable on rock surfaces.
The one exception to the comfort is at the top of the foot where the tongue is; as a minimal shoe there is not much padding, and the boney area at the top of my foot is rubbed and sore at the end of several hours.
Another thing to be aware of is that these shoes, as I imagine all minimal shoes do, get wet extremely quickly because there is minimal padding and a lower heel.
The flexible sole seems to suit trail running and rocky surfaces quite well - there is ample protection and the shoes grip and bend to uneven surfaces very well. My overall rating is that they are excellent.
