I bought this shovel to keep in my car and to use during the odd winter camping adventure. Not as nice as the Black Diamond shovels but it does the job for a lot less money at about the same weight. The only problem I found it had was the aluminum shaft being difficult to keep a grip on in the snow with gloves on.

this is a great little shovel. light weight so you could take it winter camping. I keep in my 4WD chevy Silverado incase i get stuck in the snow. I got hung up in deep snow 12/30/12 and it worked great. the buttons on the handle are a little finicky, but once you figure them out you're set. Use a little WD40 on the buttons and where the handle slides for easier deployment.

I use this shovel primarily for winter hiking/camping but also carry it for sidecountry lift access skiing as well. It is every bit as strong, light & efficient as any "brand name" shovel I've used at a much better price. Love the flat back for winter campsite prep, very packable as a unit or with the handle removed (I'm not in avy territory too much so prefer to pack it as 2 pieces). The coating keeps snow from sticking and the drilled holes allow it to be used as a snow anchor and also as part of a jury rigged sled for rescue. Just an all around, well designed, and executed back country shovel.

Great compact shovel to keep in your jeep, or on your pack, excellent for snow and sand removal, maybe loose dirt/light mud also. a little on the short side another 6 inches of handle length would ease back strain. but overall a great packable camp shovel.
