Comments about SMARTWOOL Men's Midweight Pattern Crew:
After considerable trial and error I've found this to be close to the ideal base layer for me. Warm, comfortable material, good fit, decent looking. Having plenty of material in the torso length means it won't be coming untucked every time I sit or reach which is a big deal.
The wool feels nice against skin, dries quickly, and doesn't get as stinky or have an unappealing sheen like some synthetics. Also it's naturally somewhat fire resistant if that is a consideration for you.
The biggest negative is cost. I got mine on sale
and while they are certainly worth every penny performance-wise, I personally am not used to paying so much for underwear and with the replacement cost on my mind I'm going to baby it a bit more than my cheaper synthetics.
Only other con would be that cleaning is not quite as simple as synthetics and the finish takes a hit after the first wash (pilling).
