I bought this for serious outdoor use in cold weather (20 degrees and below). It's nice that it looks nice, but that's just a bonus. The beauty of this sweater is its performance. It kept me warm during winter carneval in Quebec when it was 12 degrees outside, dogsledding in the same temp, and skiing in the evening when it was colder. It's an excellent layering tool - I wore it under the smartwool PHD jacket and put a down jacket on top and I had both flexibility and warmth. It's a little itchy for me, so I wear a silk liner underneath. I've never found a straight synthetic that kept me as warm with as little bulk.

I wear a medium in the midweight base layers by SmartWool, so I went ahead and ordered a medium for this sweater. However the medium was much too large (the sleeves covered half my hands), so I will be returning it. I love the fact that this item is machine washable, which is not the case for all SmartWool sweaters.
