I did a few hikes with PhD wool socks and they turned out to be better than I thought because the socks are comfortable and left my foot blister-free after a 10 mile hike with about 35 pounds of gear. The design of the look good and the socks are true to fit. The socks does not roll down like my other wool socks and does not loosen up inside after a prolong use of time. I highly recommend them.
My only complaint is the price being a tad bit high compared to other wool socks, but a very good investment for my foot.

I need warm socks to wear in the winter because my feet get cold when I walk early in the morning. These socks are a bit pricey at first blush, but if you take care of them - machine wash and air dry, they should last you a while. Previous pairs wore through at the heel, but these newer pairs look different. It was a happy day when I discovered SmartWool socks.

I bought my first SmartWool socks for hiking, then I used them for skiing, then I started wearing them working, and now I wear them every day. I am slowly replacing all my socks with these SmartWool socks. They are great in every aspect except the cost. BUT I think they are worth every penny. When my feet are confortable, any experience is better. To date, one sock has developed a hole after three years of regular use. SmartWool socks are the best socks I have ever owned.

These are terrific socks!!!! I am extremely happy with them and find that they can really take long backpacking trips (1 week 1 pair). I washed the sock that had been used for a week and found that it came out just fine and ready to go again.
The main problem with these socks is that the cool mesh above the toes is a bit too cool. Not only does it let air out it lets it in. I don't find this problem with any other specially woven area on the sock.
The impact zones that have been added are great and really do soften the impact of the heal and toe when they hit the ground. They also fit extremely well and I have hard to fit feet. I would suggest that one buy and use these mid weight socks for areas that are hot to just above freezing.
