Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zenith Daypack:

Bought this pack for the Presidential Traverse in NH (2 days, 1 night) as my current pack (55L Arcteryx Naos) was simply way too big for an overnight trip. Only had 1 other review on EMS to go on but after a rigorous weekend I am overall very happy with this pack. 28L was just perfect for a down sleeping bag, change of clothes/toiletries, lunch/snacks, and the usual accessories (first aid kit, PLB, etc). No issues with the suspension system or build quality; it was comfortable to carry all weekend through the mountains and did not suffer any tears/holes from being scraped on the rocks. Organization was great too, but maybe a few too many interior pockets for my minimalist needs (OCD-types will love having a compartment for everything). However there were a few flaws, mostly having to do with the design of the exterior pockets. First, the side stretch pockets are large enough to fit 1L Nalgene bottles (which is great), but like many other packs the bottles then impinge on the interior space of the main pack, reducing the available space. Side pockets should always be designed not to comprimise the interior volume of the main pack (i.e. expand outwards, not inwards). I found myself having to pack my water bottles first, and then my sleeping bag and clothes, because it would not work the other way around. Also because of this design, it becomes difficult to remove and reinsert the bottles once the pack is full; you really have to cram the bottles back into the pockets. The side pockets are also not accessible while wearing the pack so every time I needed to drink I would have to stop and remove my pack. The lower compression straps run over (not under) the side pockets, so if you use them to cinch a load then it's even more tedious to remove/replace the water bottles. The stretch elastic on the rim of the pockets are not sewn down and after a weekend's use are flipping inside-out. Imagine your t-shirt collar constantly flipping inside-out and you get the idea. These collective water bottle issues were definitely the most irritating and frustrating part of using this pack. The second pocket issue is the right hipbelt pocket, which is open and not secured with a zipper like the left hipbelt pocket. When you are taking the pack on/off, there is no tension on the elastic and everything in the pocket falls out. After a day of constantly picking up my lip balm, suncreen, lens cloth, etc I stopped using the pocket altogether. I understand it's supposed to be a "quick-access" pocket, but is a zipper such an impediment that you can't operate it while actually hiking? Ridiculous. Both pockets should be secured with zippers. Other minor flaws: hipbelt straps way too long (18" on both sides), although they can easily be trimmed with scissors and a lighter. Also, pack is not waterproof so get a liner (to be fair, neither are 99% of packs on the market, but after using a watertight Naos it feels like a step backwards).

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Zenith Daypack:

took the pack out today for a day trip and had no complaints. I dont usually write reviews but this pack was a quick pickup since my pack strap broke, and I was impressed. This pack looks small on your back but when you unload all of your gear youll be amazed at how much fit in it.
