Comments about SALEWA Women's Wildfire Hiking Shoes, Atlantis/Sulphur:

Salewas are known to be anti-blister shoes that rely on lacing to provide the best fit and a blister-free hike. That's what I found with these.

I purchased these and immediately tried them on a local 5 mile hike. I assumed these were waterproof but they are were not.

The climbing laces are the best feature and also the biggest headache. I found that the laces cut off the circulation across the top of my arches if not laced properly. After messing with the laces for about an hour I found what works for me and still wind up having to adjust from time to time. When trying laces for the first time, I would change up the laces, let my feet rest in place for 30 minutes, and if I started losing feeling or experienced pain, I knew I needed to change them up.

The laces are very long - I have yet to come up with a good system to keep them out of the way. For now, I stuff them back up and under my toe laces - check the picture.

I hate the turquoise color, but I don't really care. If you do care, these shoes will make your feet look longer than they actually are and the turquoise color really stands out.

The great thing about Salewas is that the genius who designed these had the laces go all the way to the toe, just like a climbing shoe. This means, to save your toenails and prevent blisters you cinch up the front laces. One and done. This shoe delivered - my foot stayed in place.

I have a narrow heel and the heel was extremely comfy - no blisters or hot spots. Heels did not slip at all. I have normal arches and the arches feel ok. If you have high arches you will need an insert.

I put that they are true to size. I usually have to up a size in hiking shoes. I wear a size 10 in "normal" shoes and even though I up a size in hiking shoes, some hiking shoes run so small or are cut so strangely, even an 11 does not fit. With these, the 11 was big. I like a little extra toe length and since these do not come in 10.5, I didn't want to go with the 10's., I stuck with the 11's and padded up.

I still used them hiking up Mt Washington via tuckerman and went down Lion head. I made sure to avoid water and the weather had been dry enough for me to be able to do so. I would take these up Huntington Ravine in a heartbeat.

They were absolutely stellar on the rockpile - I was extremely confident with every step. The soles were stiff enough to provide support walking on the sharp edges to get from cairn to cairn, yet flexible enough to be able to grip and bend with the rock to provide a fantastic grip.

I went back to the EMS store where I purchased these to purchase the waterproof version and was told that for both this shoe and the Salewa Mountain Trainers (my one day presi-traverse shoes) they do not sell the waterproof version. I would either have to purchase the men's GTX Mountain trainers to get waterproof from EMS and they don't sell GTX Wildfires (waterproof version) at all. So, I dropped $$$ at a competitor and got both shoes GTX versions.

I think it's just completely weird that EMS does not sell GTX's in women's. It's purchasing a DVD player that isn't blu-ray compatible. All it takes is one misstep at a stream crossing or into wet mud and you're done - even with a sock change. Wet feet = blisters.

So, while I would recommend these in any dry condition trail setting, I have to say, spend the extra $'s and get the GTX (waterproof) version so your feet are dry after a water crossing or you hit some of the wet mud we've all been experiencing this spring/summer in the Whites. Unfortunately, in order to get the GTX's you'll have to shop elsewhere.
