Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Anorak:

I REALLY wanted this jacket to be my go to shell for winter climbing and 4 season wet weather. On paper it seemed to be spot on, the material is FANTASTIC, the hood easily accepts a climbing helmet, the side zip should make getting on and off a snap, and the simplicity of a single pouch pocket seemed very smart. Were this jacket fell short for me was in its actual application. First off, the pouch pocket is sewn at an angle WHY?? The cut of the jacket is very good and this diagonal zipper throws off the symmetry. Secondly, every zipper on this jacket is a problem. I have not had a successful attempt at putting on the hood of this jacket and getting the zipper to slide all the way up the neck without snagging. I'm not talking like it hits a kink in the fabric and needs to be pulled again, I'm talking snags on fabric with a zipper that is so tight and small that you need to remove your gloves to free it. Picture coming up to the lions head on Washington with your hood down, conditions seem good, winds feel fair, body temp is warm. You then step around the corner and experience the full blow of the winds that were predicted that day from the NW. You are instantly starting to cool down and need to get that hood on and zipped up as you are quickly exposing too much skin to these cold conditions. WAIT! Your zipper snags and you can get your hood on securely. You pull back in forth in vain only to realize that you must take off your gloves and work hard to pinch the fabric stuck in the zipper and pull it free. Success! The hood is now on and oh wait, your hands are now frozen and you are doing windmills to try and get feeling back in your tips. Seems like a lot of drama just to get your hood on securely. This was my experience many times over the winter. The next zipper problem would be closing the pouch pocket when you have the neck zipper all the way open. The way the pull tabs hang for these two zippered areas makes it impossible to close the pouch without snagging the pull tab hanging down from the neck. This was not a MAJOR problem, but come on, did anyone give this jacket a test run before production?? I cut both pull tabs off and created my own out of thin cord. The last zipper issue is the pit zips. First off, this jacket doesn't need pit zips. The material breathes well and if it's not breathing well enough for your level of output then stop for a minute and strip it off. Trust me, it will take more than a minute to find and pull your pit zips open to the point that you think will give you enough ventilation, but because you likely have a pack on, your back will still be sweating and you'll end up still wanting the jacket off completely, but now you've also got to remember to close those zips up once conditions dictate the need for the coat again. Even if I liked the zips, and I don't, you have to hold the fabric down at the waist with one hand to get the TINY zipper to pull down and you have to pull on the sleeve to get the upper zipper to slide freely.

So I very much wanted to like this jacket and on paper it seems fantastic, but usage in the field proved otherwise. Fortunately zipper issues shouldn't be too hard to fix and hopefully we see a revamped version for 2015. Otherwise I liked the cut, the fabric and the weight. Just needs some refinement.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Anorak:

Like the previous reviewer Marc40A, this is precisely what I've been looking for. My old Goretex anorak wore out awhile ago and I've been searching for a shell that's just right for winter cycling + everything else. Orange is very bright for visibility and it's remarkably packable as a backup. The fit is a little on the snug side of true, but quite acceptable.

I'm really excited about this piece. There are very few companies designing with NeoShell and nobody doing it like this.

No superfluous laminates, pockets, zippers, weight, or $$$ in the price.

Cutting-edge material in a retro style.

I've been waiting for a shell like this for 20 years.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Anorak:

I bought this hardshell for mountaineering/alpiine climbing and so far it has been a god send. It is ultralite which is very nice all the time, but especially for the days when it is in the pack and doesn't need to be used. The hood is extremely adjustble and fits over a climbing helmet nicely if it need to but doesn't feel bulky without one. The collar is very well thought out with fleece lining and is a bit oversized which is nice when layering because it doesnt choke you when fully zipped. The Front center pocket is GREAT! it fits a pair of gloves and/or goggles perfectly and its easily accesible with a pack on. The pullover style is very easy to put on with the full side zipper and the pit zips are great for regulating body temp. I can't say enough good about this hardshell. I wore it all day in the white mountians of NH while it was pouring rain and high 30's air temp, I stayed warm and dry all day. That same trip this jacket took the abuse of 105MPH winds on the summit of Mt Washington, Again warm and dry all day and did not feel any wind.

I matched this jacket with the Helix bibs and could not be happier with my purchase. I highly recommend both of these products, Polartec nanoshell is amazing.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Anorak:

I do not actually own this product, but tried it on. I was dissuaded from buying it, however, because of what seems to be a design shortcoming: The full-length side-zipper is only on ONE SIDE. This is adequate for getting the jacket on/off, but there would be so much more functionality added by extending the other side's zipper. I understand that this would be a full-on copy of a popular design already put out by another manufacterer, but there's got to be a way to make it happen. It would be well worth the added weight and the effort of a re-design.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Anorak:

Have high hopes with the NeoShell material being breathable. Have not had it long enough to "push" it yet. Fits well. I am 5'8" and around 165 lbs. Went with the large to fit a primaloft pullover underneath as needed. The medium was too tight IMO. They do run slim. Otherwise good fit with the hood and arms. Like anoraks a lot; good ones can be hard to find. Have never had any trouble with EMS gear in the past. Hope to do the Italian Alps next summer. This will come along. That should "push" it. If all goes well... the fifth star will be added!

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Helix Anorak:

First time using my EMS Helix Anorak on the slopes today at Waterville Valley NH in single digit temps. Skiing in the cold has always been a problem for me because I layer up, during exertion my body temp comes up and I sweat. After a few runs go inside to take a break and some of my layers are damp. Problem is when you go back out, now you got to put back on the damp stuff. Not today. Base layer was EMS Techwick long sleeve. Middle layer EMS Techwick Thermo, Outlayer EMS Helix Anorak. Was warm and dry the entire day plus not bulky. Only negative comment on the Helix Anorak is that it is a very trim cut. I am 53 and my trim cut days are long gone.

This is a slim fit cut, I am 5" 10" 170 lbs and the medium anorak fits perfect but there is not a lot of room for layers, I bought it for warmer weather use so that is ok because I do not want a bunch of excess material to get caught on things
