Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Orion Jacket:
This is my second Orion jacket from EMS. The first was the version from two years ago. The zipper started to pull apart from the fabric of the jacket, making the whole jacket useless. I returned it to EMS for store credit and purchased a new one for about what it would have cost to repair the zipper.
Five stars to the EMS warranty and the service of their staff. I could have had the zipper repaired for free, but they can not replace a waterproof zipper, so they would have replaced it with a non-waterproof one. The clerk who processed my exchange said that this is a problem with waterproof zippers - they break easily, especially at cold temperatures, and are impossible to rpeair. Which leads me to ask, why not just use a standard zipper with a velcro flap if the jacket is going to fail after two years.
EMS has made some improvements over the older model:
-Pockets are much bigger
-Fabric seems more waterproof and less absorbant
But the sizing seems to have changed:
-Sleeves are shorter, fine for standing but too short for extended arms (size XL, I'm 6'3")
-Overall length is shorter. I can tell because my EMS size XL fleece from two years ago hangs about an inch below the waist.
-Feels tighter when worn over a fleece
Bottom line - nice jacket for the price, but don't rely on previous years' sizing, and beware the waterproof zipper.
