Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

Received this as a gift after I had tried it on in-store. I informed person who gave the gift that this would be an excellent choice for me.

This is likely to be my new favourite softshell. I also have a TNF Apex from ~5 years back and Colombia ~10 years back. I wear all three on a regular basis, mostly just which colour I prefer for that day. All three are very comparable in technical use and provide "light" water repellence (assuming they are treated and maintained with DWR finish).

The jacket exterior is of high quality. I can't quite describe it in words; soft, yet tough and "stretchy" to an extent. It has three pockets, two lower abdominal pockets (raised so to be accessible when wearing backpack) and one L sleeve pocket, which can fit cards/cash, mp3 player if desired. No internal pockets. Zippers are thick and can easily be reached/pulled with gloves on.

Interior is also high quality with an amazingly soft fleece lining. It is very comparable to say the MHW Monkey Man fleece, though not quite as lofty or fluffy. I find it to be very soft and quite nice against my skin. It provides moderate insulation on par with most other softshells.

The hood is a nice addition, I don't typically use it but nice when its a bit colder out.

Warmth wise, this will provide some warmth but should be layered with in certain conditions. Either a thin down sweater/vest or exterior windproof/waterproof shell. It is great on its own for around town in the winter time, or if you will be active while wearing it. I found having this with a cotton T shirt on in ~20-30 deg F weather while shovelling provided quite enough warmth. But if you are going to be sitting for awhile, you will want some more insulation. This is by no means a standalone solid winter jacket, it will be cold if you try to use it as such.

it breathes quite well, I haven't found myself with excessive overheating/sweating while wearing it. However I have also not participated in any significant activities (hiking/skiing) while wearing it either.

Wind resistance I cannot comment on as I have yet to experience significant wind with it.

Similar for water too. I had it on in some light snow the past few days, and nothing soaked through. However it was pretty dry and dusted off the exterior quite easily. I believe it has a DWR finish and likely will be able to provide adequate water resistance in "light" precipitation. But will soak up water with a large amount of precipitation.

I plan on using this for around town during day/night, spring skiing, and any spring/fall hiking I may do. I have a heavier coat I use for winter skiing but will definitely use this on warmer days.

I am glad that I tried this on in-store before hand. I am 5'9" ~145-150 lb and generally have been a M the last few years. However, either I am getting smaller or sizes are gradually becoming larger. The M in this was way too big. Length and sleeve wise it was fine, with a little extra in the sleeves, but the chest was way too big. It left too much room for air to get in unless I were to wear a solid 2-3 layers underneath it. The S has a great fit to my body. Enough room for an extra layer if need be but fine by itself as well. I would call it athletic as the sides seem to taper inward a bit.

Overall 4/5 stars, mostly because I don't see anything really being 5 stars. One can always find something better. I will say that it is my new go to though. It really is a great jacket and for the current sale price, you can't be that! (especially when compared to other top brands)

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

I just picked one of these up and am pretty happy. I am 5'9 and 175lbs, the medium fit well, but did not have enough room for me to layer a heavy hoodie underneath so i went up to a large. the sleeves were a little long on both sies, but overal i love how comfortable it is and how nice it looks. so far i have taken it out in this weekends rain and cold and the water beaded right off and the wind never broke through. Overall, even though I just got it, I have pretty high hopes for this jacket and am happy with it.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

I use my hoodie shopping, skiing, hiking & shoveling snow.
I love the hood. It moves with me even when looking over my shoulder.
The zipper zips up over my chin for riding on the chair lift.
My back stays covered when bending over, and sleeves stay on my wrists when reaching.
The hem cord stays on my hip when tightened down to block wind.
The two pockets zip low enough to put my hands or big enough (they go inside up to my shoulder) to hold my long gloves or map.

This hoodie can be layered under a shell or worn by itself on warmer days. It is not the warmest mid-layer, but perfect in the right temperatures. The zippers are super nice. The large, fully adjustable hood adjusts easily if you want to wear a hat under the hood. The high collar eliminates the need for a neck warmer. The lining is super soft and comfortable. EMS hit the nail on the head with this hoodie!

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

Needed something to take on a trip to Ireland later this month and something versatile enough to also use when day hiking, snow blowing, and for raw New England days (wet or dry). Tried on the Large over a T shirt and sweatshirt and it fit but was a little snug and tight when trying to zip up. Got the XL and besides the sleeve length being a bit long, this is a good fit. I will just cuff the sleeve if needed.

Today I wore a long sleeve shirt, a light weight fleece pull over and this jacket while snow blowing five driveways after storm Nika hit our state and this item performed as desired. I was warm and dry without uncomfortably overheating. Wind blocking, and repelled light rain. Two negatives though for me - this is not a Goretex product but that would drive the price point up. The other drawback is there is no chest or inside pocket/pouch that an Android smartphone can fit into. There is one small arm zip pocket but that is for IDs, cash, keys, and other small items.

Overall - I would buy this item again and considering it was onsale, it was a great purchase.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

This is an excellent jacket to have from late Fall to early Spring...works well as a weekend jacket around town to casual hikes out in the country. If it's too cold, I wear it with my ski shell and works great as a mid-layer.

My only complaint is the sizing seems to be off - I'm 5'8" & 160 lbs and the small is very roomy around the chest. I would have preferred the jacket to be an athletic/slim cut, so it can better fit inside a shell (it's tight but works), but it's still a good jacket for the money.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

First I want to say that after a few years of boring products, EMS is finally producing clothing that looks great. I think this is the new version of the Cloudsplitter and you can tell right away that the styling has improved (style is more than different color zippers!). For some reason the description doesn't mention that this jacket has a DWR coating - it does and it works great - run it under your sink, it's really cool!

BIG negative is the sizing, as mentioned by a previous poster. I have about a dozen EMS-brand jackets, and I've always been a medium (5'11" and 150ish). The medium for this jacket is gigantic, probably equivalent to what's normally a large or maybe extra large. Again, like the previous poster, I had to go for a small, which is just a LITTLE too small for me. I'm going to keep the jacket but I'm bummed I won't get the same good fit that I'm used to.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's CloudSplitter Hoodie:

Cloud Splitter is perfect for winter wear as a top layer over thin, but warm technical shirts or as a layer under other outerwear (vest or coat). With hood up and jacket zipped, it offers face protection from the cold and wind. It is not bulky and the fabric allows freedom of movement for hiking or other outdoor activities.
