Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Air Flow Rain Jacket:

Bought this on sale because of light weight and Event fabric, plus it has pit zips. Most Event jackets do not include pit zips. No matter how breathable the fabric is advertised to be, any real exertion will cause your body heat to overwhelm the fabric and you end up clammy and wet. Pit zips go a long way to alleviate this.

EMS does not make it clear that this is not Event but Event DVL which is a 2.5 layer version that is lighter weight by substituting an inner film layer for a fabric layer. This makes the fabric lighter but also less comfortable against bare skin. If you hike in short sleeves (I do not) this may feel somewhat unpleasant. The tech specs mention it is 2.5 layer but the overview does not. 3 layer Event garments tend to be much more expensive.

I bought the Tarmac - fancy name for a color somewhere between olive drab and mud. Minus 1 star for this.

Comments about Eastern Mountain Sports EMS Men's Air Flow Rain Jacket:

I researched and searched in stores for a quality rain jacket for about 3 weeks. I have done 900 miles of the AT in the past and now that i moved to the Oregon coast i needed a great rain jacket. I looked at just about every rain coat on every website, searched reviews, fabrics, pros and cons, weight, etc. I couldn't find a rain coat that i really liked. Even the $500 ones i would turn down over this jacket. I wanted a good fabric with breathability. I am a warm guy and i need all the help i can get when hiking especially in the rain. And the eVent fabric is just about the best in that department, its way better than gore-tex in breathability and a lot of the million other fancy name fabrics. This jacket gives more temperature control with great dual-zipper pit zips which are not too hard to operate when the jacket is on. Pit zips seem to be a rarity in many of the other jackets with great breathability fabrics including eVent. I don't understand why they come out with these fabrics and get rid of vents or put vents in worse areas (arm pits create a lot of heat and they are more hidden from the rain). eVent is a great fabric but it doesn't mean you will no longer be able to work up a sweat. These things (and good waterproof zippers) were about 90% of what i wanted in a jacket then i was willing to settle on most of the rest of the specs.

After the right fabric, the pit zips, i wanted good pockets and water proof zippers and good hood. This has 2 large easy access pockets that you can put your hands in easily and comfortably while walking. The hood is great too, i have the ability to wear a helmet or a large winter hat easily. And the zippers seem great so far with keeping the elements out. lastly, i was looking at the price. I was shocked to see what a deal this was. Kudos to EMS for designing a better rain jacket than most of all the other gear companies (that focus more of a budget on design than EMS i would guess). And thank you for saving my wallet. I do wish they had more of the brown/green in stock :( but the red one looks better in person than on the website.

Now i haven't tested the jacket a ton but I have done a few hikes in the rain and used it around town for everyday use (I have had it about a month in the in the rainy Oregon coast in october and now november. At first i didn't like the dual zippers on the main zipper. It's a little harder to zip the coat up than i would like but i think that comes with having the second zipper which i actually prefer. I like having the ability to loosen the lower part of the rain jacket. i would take this on a thru-hike if i ever did one again. Its packable enough and i wouldn't blink at the weight, the benefits outweigh the weight, ha. I wouldn't take a lesser quality lighter jacket.

I like having options with my gear. I like being able to have more control over the elements and situations and i think this design does the trick better than most. I don't know why there are so many badly designed top end rain jackets or why the good designs don't incorporate more breathable fabrics. I am surprised how gore-tex has still been able to maintain such a large market. Demand better products with your wallets.

so yeah, EMS, great job, I'm a fan.

I was a bit worried about going with this product over the Northface version, but it turned out great. The store clerks help answer all of my questions. This jacket worked well recently on a rain/warm/mild day where air flow was need based on hot/cold. The material is really nice. In the past I had been using a cheapy 10$ jacket, this was well worth the amount I spent.
