Comments about THE NORTH FACE Men's McMurdo Parka:

An excellent protective garment for extreme winter weather conditions. Not really for active wear but does collapse to pack with you for when it is needed. I wore it to Colorado for use around camp/ranch at elevations of 7000-10000' in snow and high wind conditions. This parka exceeded my expectations for wind-stop, moisture protection, and insulation. A bit heavy and bulky for skiing and snowshoeing but sure needed it around for the apre' ski outside. I used it for day hikes to get to elevation and remote locations for photography which involved static situations in cold and wind. Good for mountain winters when walking, day-hiking in snow/wind/back-country photography especially. Was able to stuff lenses, cleaners, photography equipment into pockets when needed for easier access than using backpack.

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Men's McMurdo Parka:

I bought a coat very similar to this from CB 20 years ago. It finally wore out, but I had a hard time finding a replacement that had a similar combination of weight (not too heavy), warmth (very), and length (mid-thigh). Seems current fashion favors hip length these days. So I was thrilled to find this parka, which is just what I was looking for. However I have run into two issues:
    1. The first time I squatted down to pick up something the pressure of my knees moving outward broke the zipper. I was shocked, as this never happened with my 20-year-old CB model, even though it's the same length and has about the same amount of room down there. Turns out the reason is that the CB has a 2-way zipper (so it automatically unzips up to relieve pressure if you squat down and push your legs out). The North Face jacket has a one way zipper, so instead of harmlessly releasing under pressure, the bottom end of the zipper broke apart (so that it became unusable). I could have sent it back for repair under warranty, but figured it would just break again next time I stress it. So I had a local tailor put in a new 2-way zipper instead. It was not very expensive, and seems to have solved that problem nicely.

    2. The hood is much too large for my head size, so it droops down over my eyes. On my other jackets with hoods (the CB model, and a hip-length one for LL Bean) there's a draw string that can be used to effectively shorten the hood front to back, so it stays up above my eyes. But on the North Face, the only adjustment is across the top front of the hood. So it hugs my head properly, but still shifts down over my eyes. Looks like another trip to the tailor.

Overall I still like this jacket very much.

It's a nice Coat....Needs more inner pockets and there is a little wind seepage around the arm seams. Overall a very nice warm Parka for casual wear around town and out in the woods.
