Don't Wear the PreCip in Heavy Rains

Comments about MARMOT Men's PreCip Rain Jacket:

This past Saturday while hiking up Giant mountain Rocky Ridge in the Adirondacks I donned this jacket for protection from heavy rains for the first time and it was a complete disappointment. The outside nylon material absorbed water across the entire surface making the coat heavier and allowed water to permeate to the inside through the inner liner causing me to become water logged as well. I would expect a rain jacket to bead water off not absorb and transmit it inwards. After drying it out as an experiment I made a pocket on the backside avoiding seams and poured water into it, I was not surprised to see it drip through. In doing more research I believe the PreClip is more suited for urban and light weather use not heavy rain.

Comments about MARMOT Men's PreCip Rain Jacket:

I purchased a replacement for a precip bought 7 or 8 years ago. The old one was flawless! The new one is not water resistant let alone water proof. Right off the rack when you'd expect it would be at its best, it soaks up the water.

Comments about MARMOT Men's PreCip Rain Jacket:

A great jacket. Comfortable, breathable and lightweight. Waterproof, but only to a point. I wouldn't recommend wearing this in a heavy rain, whereas the material does tend to absorb. But in light rains, and sprinkles, the more common of weather types, this is a great jacket. And for a hundred dollars, there is no other kind of protection. You would have to spend a lot more in order to get something better.

This is great for warm weather & to layer in cold. It blocks rain, damp, mud and wind. The pull cords, back of the head velcro and visor help create a good fit around the face which helps visibility, including for bike riding.
The pocket mesh makes it easy to find my keys, phone, etc.

Comments about MARMOT Men's PreCip Rain Jacket:

This is a great, lightweight jacket that's perfect for backpacking or just having in my car if the weather looks iffy. It weighs next to nothing, so throwing it in my bag/pack is a no brainer. The hood is one of the best I've used and i like it better than the REI and North Face jacket it's replaced. I'd recommend it for weekend backpacking or day trips where a raincoat/ windbreaker would be helpful but would probably opt for something a little more robust and longer if I knew I was going to be heading out into a multi day rain situation.

Comments about MARMOT Men's PreCip Rain Jacket:

I am very pleased with this jacket. I bought it specifically for a trip to the South Island of New Zealand in Jan 2010. It rained quite often and this jacket kept me dry. I knew when I bought it that it would not keep me warm. You need to have layers beneath this jacket if you are going somewhere cold. I like that this jacket can be used as an everyday rain jacket even when I'm not hiking. That was also a big reason that I bought it.

I got caught in a heavy rainstorm while camping, jacket kept me very dry. My only complaint is the hood does not stay rolled up under the collar very well, can be annoying while hiking.

Comments about MARMOT Men's PreCip Rain Jacket:

The only issue with this jacket, is that if you plan on using it for backpacking, the pockets are at the level with your hip/waist belt on your backpack, which makes the pockets hard to access with a backpack on. If you have stuff in your pockets with your backpack, you will find the items rub against your waist. Extremely waterproof. Works great. Just wish the pockets were located somewhere different.
