Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
Nice boot. Minimal break in period, comfortable and look great. I get a lot of comments on them. My only grip is that the laces come untied all the time. And not under heavy use, just walking around in them. They are a great boot but your stopping every 15 min. to tie them. I'm told its because of the round laces and other people have told me they have the same problem with other boots with round laces. It does help to double knot them but for [$] they should stay tied.

Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
The first day I wore these boots I risked a 10 mile hike on a NJ section of the AT. Even I thought that this would be risky, however, my feet were great at the end of the hike, no hot spots or blisters. I was concerned about the possibility of sole separation since I had heard about this from other reviewers, however, after almost 2 years of hard use this never happened. My one complaint is that they were never satisfactorily waterproof. EMS changed them out for me despite their well used condition. I can't overstate how important a good fit is. What is good for one may not be good for another. I just hiked 9 miles on Bearfort Ridge. Rocky, difficult, scrambling. No problem on the first time using the new pair.
Pros
- Mountain Hiking
Cons
- Hard on feet
- Premature wear
- Tough Break in
Best Uses
- Ankle support
- Grips to rocks well
Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
Very tough break in. After boots broken in, I limped after every hike, without fail. My hiking buddy swears by these boots, just not for me. Maybe a pair of insoles would help. Would never purchase again.

Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
I was looking for a stiff backpacking 3 season boot. They are that and more. The break in period was horrific. I am very used to hiking in leather boots and thought these would break easier. I have owned these for 6 months now and always the next hike would be better as I may have to get used to them. After a day of climbing in them I am left limping. Hate these boots. My hiking buddy owns a pair and swears by them though. I thought about using some some superfeet insoles but with winter approaching, I need to find a good pair of leathers. Hope to find a better pair of 3 season boots in the spring.

Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
I am a Professional Land Surveyor who works outside every day and lives in boots. The Asolos are light, comfy and warm. The fabric portion of the boot is NOT very durable. After only one short hike in the woods, a found two holes in the fabric. Ive had other fabric/leather boots with Cordura fabric that have held up for years.

Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
I was really excited to get these. I didn't know they had a wide version but if i did i would have gotten a set at the time. That aside i went against my friends suggestion of the Asolo TPS520s because i figured Id be okay with hiking boots.
At first they were a bit tight but they did get more comfortable especially with good socks. The boots have good treads and waterproof-ness.
Now to my gripes. These boots never seemed able to get tight back to secure my ablee back. This made it so my foot would slide forward on decent which the gets annoying...and you can't fix it by just tightening the laces.
Now to my main gripe... they don't last long without needing repair. I've only hiked with these about a dozen times with only two of these hikes being over 5 miles. Now the rubber in front of the toes is coming apart from the boot...on both boots. This is very disappointing because I had such high expectations.

Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
Hiked up off the AT with 20-30 lbs and had all the support and comfort I could ask for. Great on the trail, with a pack, and still stylish for those sloppy city days.

Comments about Smartwool ASOLO Men's Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots, Wool/Black:
I got these shoes on Saturday, did a moderate 6 mile hike on Sunday, and returned them on Monday. They are comfortable are first but didn't fit well at all while on the trail. Far too much wiggle room in the toe area leads to discomfort and blisters. They lacked the grip that good Virbram soles have. At least they come on and off easy.
This would be a fine boot for those staying on flat, dry land. But these ain't serious hiking boots. To EMS's credit, the store was helpful and took them back without question.
