Comments about JOBY Original Gorillapod Tripod:
I have used this gorillapod for about a year and a half; for [$] that's not a great lifespan (I'm a student on a budget).[...] the first one broke after a month, but the second one developed the same problem: weak ball joint sockets. After only careful use (ie, not grabbing and twisting it like a chimp), the plastic sockets inevitably crack, and then that joint becames weak and bends too easily, letting even small cameras flop over. The problem always starts at the three fixed sockets near the head, but it can happen to any socket if it's accidentally bent a little too far; the socket cracks and the ball pops out, and that joint becomes useless.So... great for casual travel use, when you're on the go and don't want to carry a full-size tripod - it can grab onto ledges, lampposts, signposts, etc., making shake-free shots or HDR triplet shots easy. But it's so flimsy and easily broken that I can't recommend it for climbing, hiking, biking, or any use in which the legs might inadvertently be bent too far or pulled out (it only takes a little pressure to ruin a joint). If it were a generic product [*] and sold for $5, I'd probably give it a four-star review for good price - but at [$], it's an overpriced piece of plastic that doesn't last. Wait till the company's patent expires and cheap knockoffs appear; then you can choose between price and performance. The current model hasn't really got either.

Really handy gadget; almost no weight, strong and flexible; always grab it when hiking and often for general travel. Well made.

We got this as a gift for a friend but also have one ourselves. We love how you can pretty much set it up anywhere! No more holding your arm out to take a group shot!
