Well it works, but it doesn't come with a striker so you would have to use your own knife or other tool, I figured it would, like many others, have the striker included so you don't have to dull your knife.

I've heard about these things for some time now. Just recently purchased one to take with me on a camping trip to test out. What I like about it.. extremely compact and light weight, easy to use, burns VERY hot once ignited, and defiantely will get a fire going. Actually I used this the entire camping trip to start all the fires and do all cooking. The only cons I can think of for this tool would be that it isn't designed to be used in windy conditions. Although it's not impossible to do so. the second biggest con would be that it likes to quickly dull blades. my advice... carry a small cheap blade to use with this item, or purchase and carry with you a compact blade sharpener to keep your blades edge in the field.

I just bought this today so I've yet to test it out in a survivalist situation, HOWEVER, I did try it in the comfort of my own backyard and it worked beautifully! The magnesium shavings burn so hot that they are capable of igniting a wide variety of tinder. A previous poster mentioned that he found the shaving process a bit time-consuming. At first I had the same issue but figured out that if you hold the knife at an 80 degree(ish) angle against the block (so that the acute angle faces the direction of the stroke) whilst applying a fair amount of pressure against the block, you end up with more substantial shavings, thus saving time. The only trouble I had with it was with the wind blowing away the shavings. You really need to find a suitable shelter--a tent should do just fine! Seeing as how I've been scraping at this thing all day and have yet to make a dent in the quantity of metal, I imagine this thing would last a very, very long time. For the price, why wouldn't you buy one?!

This thing is great! I can't believe I waited so long to buy one. The day I got it I took it out to see if it truly was as good as promised by a friend of mine. Well, dew on the grass and semi-damp wood didn't stop it at all...I was able to start a fire with no problem. My only problem is that it's a bit small (difficult to grip)...but it does a great job starting a fire and is easily packable/carried. Great product!

I was really excited to check this product out. Doesn't just make a pile of mag shaveings easily, it takes time. Guess I hyped it up in my mind. Not giving it a bad review because I can really see the usefulness as a backup or survival tool. Regular camping?...Get yourself some "strike anywheres".

Creates an intensely hot and bright spark that will ignite an ember in any dry organic tender (shredded dry leaves, pulverized pine cones, shredded cedar bark, and the like)by creating an ember that you gently blow into a flame after rolling the tender around the ember. This flaming tender ball is then placed under dry sticks and as the sticks burn you add larger pieces of dried wood to create a campfire. Can also be used to easily ignite charred cloth that flint and steel users ignite to make a flame from tender. The shredded tender bundle is then wrapped around the glowing charred cloth and blown into gently to heat and ignite the tender bundle. Blow harder as the tender bundle ignites to create a flaming tender bundle to put under a pile of very dried sticks.
